I'd like to know if the HDMI-port on the Acer Chromebase CA24I2 can be used for input, e.g. an external dvd player and make the device function as a monitor, or is that port only for output, to link an external screen to the chromebase?

The specs and manual mention an HDMI port, but not what functionality it supports

The HDMI port on the Acer Chromebase CA24I2 only serves as an output, to connect an external screen, or it can also serve as an input, for example to connect an external DVD player and use the Chromebase as a screen (provided selecting an input source)?

No, the HDMI port is for video output only. You can connect a monitor to it to either mirror the current display or extend your desktop.

That would seem logical, but according to the retailer where I'm planning to buy, the HDMI has input functionality and can be used to connect an external DVD player, where the chromebase would function as a dumb screen.

I'd like to know for certain of course

Have the retailer demonstrate that for you. Typically on an all in one design there are separate HDMI input and output ports when they support using a port for an input. That isn't the case with the CA24I2. Here is the relevant section from the block diagram:

They show only DDI outputs for both the LCD and the HDMI port. The DDI shown out from the left of that image goes to the USB-C port, which can also be used for video out.
