Aspire TC-1660 Query reg: do I need to upgrade my PSU to use the GTX1650?

Hi, I have an Aspire TC-1660 that needs an upgrade for light gaming. I have bought GTX-1650 (has a power port) and originally thought I could fit it and pull power from the MB via Sata, but reading on other sites, folk advise this is a fire risk as the Sata cables are not rated, 54w rated vs 70w GPU requirement.

Is this correct?

I have read many reviews here and found the PSU manufacturer part numbers for upgrade to 500w, but these are scarce ….

do i need to upgrade my PSU to use the GTX1650?

PS I am a complete newbie!

The Aspire TC-1660 desktop came oem from Acer with either a 300W PSU or a 500W PSU but either of these PSUs will work with the GTX1650 gpu as it requires a 300W PSU minimum. I suggest that you search on eBay or the web for a 500W with the two highlighted Acer part numbers below, as they have allot of these 500W PSUs listed for reasonable prices for your TC-1600 desktop.

also, Acer did fit an oem GEFORCE GTX 1650.4GB GDDR5.128B.8000MHz gpu card which and if you bought a genuine card, it will cost 2x times more than a normal GTX1650 card, so be aware of that also. good luck and hope this assist you further.

Specs from Nvidia state you can run the GTX 1650 on a 300W supply… So you likely don't need the 500W version.

    Hey @billsey @StevenGen,

    thanks for the help.

I ended up buying the PSU (DC5001B009) as I had read of a fire risk from the Sata cables not rated (54w rated vs 70w GPU requirement).

Turns out the DC5001B009 does not fit my TC-1660! 😔 see photos below.

First picture - left is the new 500w unit and right is my TC1660 power unit.

    Second pic - TC-1660 unit

    Third pic - New unit

Did I buy wrong? or is my TC-1660 and odd one? …

Is there a fire risk of fitting the GTX-1650 with sata cables? if not, then what cable do i need to buy to get the GTX up and running?

    And anyone looking to buy a DC5001B009 …. ? 😁

There were two cases and two power supply designs used on the Aspire TC-1660 models, apparently. Here is the relevant portion of the back of the earlier version, which is what is illustrated in the SG:

Which fits the normal ATX12VO power supply, DC.5001B.009. As you can see in his list of PSUs, your DC.3001H.005 part number isn't shown, since it was a new version done for those later shipped models. :( You certainly don't need to upgrade to a 500W power supply for your 1650 and you won't have to worry about fires, but you shouldn't be pulling the GTX 1650 power off the SATA connectors anyway, it should be off the ATX_AUX power if it needs more than the PCIe bus can provide.

    Thanks @billsey ,

My GTX1650 has a connector port so I had assumed It would need more power. The power unit that is fitted (DC.3001H.005) does not have any spare connectors/outputs; both 12V outputs (ref pic below) are fitted to MB.

I did try to see if it could pull enough from the board, ie i fit the GTX with no separate power connector and started the tower, I connected HDMI to a monitor but nothing happened.

How do I get power to the GTX 1650 ?

Yeah, I don't have access to a parts list for the DT.BGVEK.001 model. I really can only see that level of detail for units sold in the USA and Canada. In looking through the SKUs I do have access to, none have the smaller Flex supply in a 500W version. It's possible to use adapter cables to allow an old school ITX/Flex ATX to work in a 12VO design, Here are the pinouts used for your power:

Typically the PSU has a 24 pin connector instead of the 6 pin, with many more voltages brought out. The adapter cable will convert that to just the needed 6 pins and then there will be other cables to give you both the 8 pin needed for the motherboard ATX_12V connector and a six pin for the GTX 1650.
