ACER E273 Abidpx (Part #: UM HE3AA A01) Horizontal/Vertical Lines and Screen Freezing

BACKGROUND:
I have had this monitor since 2020 and used it as my main monitor for 4 years. It was manufactured in 2018. My warranty expired 2021. It has been my main monitor with constant use up until about 3 months ago. I pivoted to a new setup and only used this monitor with an old setup only once a month. However, when I came back to this monitor, after nothing changing about the setup, the monitor started displaying a ton of horizontal and vertical lines all over the screen. It starts upon monitor power with a few horizontal lies beginning an inch from the bottom almost like a dB meter going up and down. Then, as around a minute reaches, the lines start incrementing to such a degree that they cover most the screen then the screen freezes, the lines start stacking vertically as well, and the colors mold till the screen looks like a heat map. It is unusable atp. When I first noticed this, I did not attempt to solve it because the lines only reached a few inches and went away after a few minutes and I was able to use the monitor without issue. However, two months passed after the problem began, and now I cannot even use the monitor past 1 minute because the screen freezes from the lines covering everything then seeming like it melts the display.

ATTEMPTS TO SOLVE:

- I have determined it is not a computer or driver issue. Other monitors in the same ports and on same computer work fine. I have also plugged the monitor into a separate computer that used a separate outlet and it had the same issue. I also noticed this issue occurs even just powered, no display port or HDMI is necessary for me to replicate this. When I plug in the power cord from an outlet (normally on my power strip) to the monitor and the logo pops up, I already see the lines. I also tried multiple HDMI cables and that changed nothing. I am unsure if this could be an issue with the power cable but I don't see why that would be the problem since that does not change the display.- I have factory reset the monitor settings but that did not resolve anything. Additionally, I never changed the settings since I bought the monitor before factory resetting recently.- I have unplugged the monitor and let it sit for a hour to let electrons discharge but upon replugging it has the same issue.- I tried using it as a single monitor setup and as a dual monitor setup. Configurations did not change the situation as I stated it happens even when just powered on.

HELP! If anyone knows how to solve this issue, I would really prefer not to buy a new monitor (or a new LCD screen since I heard those cost just as much). Thank you and if you need extra details let me know! I have attached some photos I took of my monitor when it had the problem occur. These photos were all taken within the span of a few hours where I was trying my troubleshooting. (yes I know I blurred out a screen that already is unreadable but never hurts to be safe with digital privacy)

Thanks for getting back to us. The power supply for your ED273A is (I believe) a 12V 5A supply, so 60W. Check to make sure both of the ones you are testing with meet that spec. Your description sounds very much like there is a heat related issue, so as the monitor warms up it gets worse and worse. That could be the power supply itself getting too hot internally or something in the monitor circuit that is responding to heat. Here is a high level diagram that shows how the design works:

We can likely discount the convertor, since you aren't seeing a dim screen or an overly bright screen. Any of the voltage converters could be failing, giving incorrect voltages to the Scaler IC, or that chip itself could be failing. If we can't pin it down to the power supply itself, it will likely take a decent technician to diagnose.

I have the same problem, luckily the monitor that I have is under warranty and I had not used it for more than a month, I went to take it to support to see if there is a solution and if they solve my problem I can help you by telling you that they had to change it or if there is no solution.

It looks like the two of you are dealing with different issues, and since the second post is for a monitor that's still in warranty, it likely is also a different model than the ED273A (Note, not E273A, ED273A matches the UM.HE3AA.A01 part number). It would be best if that second monitor started it's own thread to help minimize confusion.

For the ED273A, you look like you have a hardware issue, but don't discount the power supply. A weak power supply will often present as a garbled display that gets worse as the supply heats up. Do you have access to an alternate power supply?

Sorry for the delay, I was getting myself another power supply and the issue still occurs for around a minute but hasn't reached the point where it freezes. It just shows lines about 1/10 of the way from the bottom of the screen upwards then stops until I restart the computer / repower the monitor. This power supply is also old, so I am not sure if the issue would persist with a newer one but it is the only one I could find that worked with the monitor. It is able to work now as I can use it without problem after letting it sit a minute, but it seems unpredictable as this was the situation it was in prior.

I sadly don't have a different 60W power supply with me so I ordered one online. I appreciate the help so far and will update this forum once it arrives (it says it will arrive on 6th).

Could you please try these one by one:

1.Connect the laptop to an external display like TV or another PC with a HDMI cable and see whether it looks the same.

2.While these lines appear move the panel to different positions and check whether there are any changes.

    1. It is a home desktop not a laptop and it is an external monitor having the issues. I connected the monitor to another PC with two different HDMI cables but it did not change the problem.
    2. I moved my monitor around in different positions during the effect but could not notice any significant difference.

I am still waiting on my power supply, I hope that is the problem and will update when I can.

Hi everyone, apologize for the necro but I had to move temporarily and was unable to test my monitor. When using a new power supply, its been a few days of usage with no sign of previous issues. It seems that was indeed the problem.

I would like to update everyone that as of today, after a few days of use, the issue has returned, even with a new power supply. It seems that something is wrong with the monitor internally and I will be getting a new one instead unless there are any other ideas. However, I doubt it is fixable for a price cheaper than a new monitor.

    Solution 1

We need to determine whether it is a hardware or software issue.. Turn off the computer. Tap f2 ( f2 for laptop , del for desktop ) while turning on the computer. It will go to bios. Please stay on the bios screen for 30 mins. If the display is looking good on bios then it is a software issue. If the display is not looking good on the bios screen then it is a hardware issue.

If it is a software issue try the following the steps..

    Try windows x

    go to device manager

    expand display adapter

right click on display driver - uninstall

    Restart the computer

    It should work fine..

If it is still not working

Uninstall the display adapter from device manager

    Don’t restart the computer.

    Go to support.acer.com

    chose your country

type snid or chose your model

    go to drivers

    Install the display driver

    It should work fine..

    Solution 2

It might be a cable issue.. Remove all the cables from monitor. Press and hold the power button of monitor for 1 min. Connect all the cables back. Try to turn on the monitor. Connect the monitor to computer and check. If the cable is non removable please don't try to remove it.

Please remove the cable between monitor and computer. Try to connect it back and check. If possible try to use an alternative cable and check.

If the problem persists try to use an alternative power cable and display cable and check. Try to bypass the surge protector and connect the monitor directly to power outlet. Try to connect monitor on a different power outlet or surge protector and check.

On the monitor – use the control buttons. There will be an option to reset monitor settings to default. Try to reset the monitor and check.

To isolate the issue, try to use the same monitor to a different computer and check or Try to use an alternative monitor on this computer and check.
