Acer Connect X6E-Guest Wi-Fi doesn't block access to devices on your local network and

I found a few issues with my Acer Connect X6E, running on firmware X6E_GBL_1.02.000035 with web version X6E_WEB_1.01.000024 and module version X6E_V1.1.4_GBL_240207

  1. Security: Guest Wi-Fi doesn't block access to devices on your local network. I am able to access my NAS on my local network from the guest Wi-Fi
  2. Device functioning: It seems that about every two/three months there is an issue with the device, I am guessing that is due to a bloating of the settings (backup is 67kB after a reset en reconfiguration but before it was 1468kB) or else there might be an issue (as I concluded from the bloating) with the 5G Internet Statistics and an inability to clear previous data, as stated "The system will only keep statistics for the current month and the previous two months.", this seems to coincide with the device issues, where it seems to starts rebooting frequently and also once with an auto update of the device firmware, where it stopped functioning and I needed a reset (I could not restore the large backup file, that's how I noticed the big size difference). It seems that the SMS Inbox data and usage statistics are stored in the settings backup. Now I need a reset and restore the clean settings backup and then also need an extra reboot or restart by disconnecting and after some 10 seconds reconnecting the power
  3. Minor issue: Logged errors web front-end, in the developer console is see multiple errors with requests like "/cgi-bin/cgibin?CgiName=web_get_usage_info&hiddenLoading=true" where there is a "XML Parsing Error: not well-formed", the response is a JSON response so yeah that will not parse as XML.

Please Acer can you fix these issues?

From the specs it is a really nice device although the config options are a bit limited to my taste. But these issues, especially 1 and 2, make the device seem bad, and issue 3, really, is any testing being done?

Do others also experience these issues?

You aren't corresponding with any Acer employees here, just us other Acer users. You should pass the contents of your post to Acer support. Is the guest network on the same subnet as your main network? A typical way they handle guests is to put them on a separate subnet. Some of the newer router designs are handling the guests on the same subnet, but disallowing traffic from those addresses, with that scheme you can still sometimes get to local resources by using an IP address instead of the URL.

"You aren't corresponding with any Acer employees here", yeah, still I hope they will look through these discussions/questions. But thanks for your reply, now I will also look at other ways of contacting Acer.

My previous router didn't have a separate subnet either, but I still could not access my local network. It would be nice if I could create a VNET, but I don't expect that from this device, I do expect that the guest network isn't able to access my local network devices.

For the second issue I might create a script that restores the minimal backup each month and see if that prevents issues in the future. I'm still interested if other also experience these issues, although the second issue might occur only if 5G is the primary WAN, or if load balancing is used.

I have contacted the Acer Customer Care Desk for my region, so I hope they will look into the issues I noticed.

Are you trying the ping from an internal device on your network, or from an external device on a different network? Often the routers don't handle internal requests for the external address well. You could try using a VPN on a device to make it act as if it were external, then try accessing your DMZ from it.

The issues have been forwarded to the development team. I hope they are able to reproduce these issue, so they can improve the product.

@Axxo : I don't think that is the issue, I connected my laptop to the Guest Wi-Fi and then was able to access my NAS on the fixed local network, although for Guest Wi-Fi it is stated that: "This provides Internet connection for guests, but blocks access to devices on your local network."

Just noticed a new firmware version X6E_GBL_1.02.000037, unfortunately after checking issues 1 and 3 I could still reproduce these. For issue 1 I even disconnected the device from the power supply for some time and did a clearing of the ARP table (command: arp -d) on my laptop. I cannot say anything about issue 2 because for that I probably need to wait a few months.

Also checked firmware version X6E_GBL_1.02.000038 but the result is same as for 37. Also looked into creating a script to automatically restore a backup periodically (related to issue 2), but the login part has some encryption on the front-end that includes some timestamp and although I could probably reverse engineer the encryption method I don't think it's worth my effort. I probably could use some UI testing (or similar) software to automate this using a browser, for now I will just wait and see.

Got a notification that new firmware will be coming out soon that would resolve the issue. Unfortunately currently I got the issue 2 again, as the latest reset I have done was 2 to 3 months ago. Due to this I now cannot restore my backup as this resets the router again (reboot seems to do a reset), also a reboot using the UI or taking the power off the device now results in a reset instead of a reboot. The reset function using the UI gives a server error, so something is really going wrong. I previously used a different IP range than the default, but setting this also restarts the device and this now leads to a reset, so also that doesn't work anymore. I hope the new firmware will fix this all.
