Hello, every time I try to eject an external drive, I get the pop up that a says the device is currently in use, and to close any programs that may be using it. When I go to the task manager, I don't see any apps running that could be using it. I noticed that more often times than not, the laptop will be stuck on the "shutting down" screen as well, and I have to hold the power button to shut off it. I am wondering if that issue could be related. I have an Acer Aspire, and it is only 7 months old. Thanks for your help!

Hi, update the driver for the external HDD and close File Explorer before ejecting the drive. This feature has been depreciated by MS as modern PnP external drives don't need to be ejected before disconnecting, click on the drive and in properties select Quick removal:

and just disconnect the drive when all tasks are completed, you won't lose data.

Go to file explorer and right click Eject on the external drive or go to task manger and click on that as it will have Eject there too, that is the two methods that you should use as they work, even if you don't get the notifications that they have been ejected as its safe once you do these two steps.

    Task manager

    File Explorer

If the “This device is currently in use” error appears on your Windows 10/11 computer, try closing all files and programs on it. Then try to eject the removable device safely from the computer. Or you can refresh the desktop a few more times, and then try to eject the removable device.

Thank you for all over your responses. When I plug in my external today, I will follow these practices and see what happens. Take care!
