Acer Predator X32Q FS display flashes over USB-C, disconnects and doesn't wake with MacBook pro

I just bought an Acer Predator X32Q FS display, which I use with a MacBook Pro (14" M1) over USB-C (DisplayPort Alt, 4k, 144Hz.). It's a good combination when it works.

However, I have had several problems with the USB connection, all of which are intermittent:

  • When waking my laptop, the display often does not wake up. It does not respond to the power button, menu button, or unplugging/replugging USB. It shows no image, is not recognized by the laptop, and doesn't charge the laptop.
  • Sometimes the display switches to flashing red/green/blue/white/black.
  • Sometimes the display turns off after a few seconds, and then reconnects and turns back on.

These problems are generally solved by power cycling the display, using the switch on the power strip, but usually not by other means. Rebooting the computer or disconnecting/reconnecting USB doesn't usually help, so I think the problem is probably on the monitor end. No other computers or peripherals are currently connected to the display.

I've tried using both the USB-C cable that came with the display, and another one that's also rated for power delivery and DP Alt at an appropriately high bandwidth (I don't remember now but I checked that the bandwidth was nominally enough when I bought it), and switching the cable does not noticeably affect the problem.

Is there a settings fix for this? The X32Q FS doesn't have firmware updates, does it? The Acer page on X32Q FS has support links but none of them work, at least not in the Dutch version of the page.

Is this problem present only with the macbook? Does it work fine on other laptops (windows based).
