Using an NVMe U.3 SSD/1.92TB-2.5Inch in an Old Acer Machine

Hello everyone,

I recently purchased an NVMe U.3 SSD/1.92TB-2.5Inch drive and I'm hoping to use it in my older Acer machine. However, I'm not sure if it's compatible with my system or if I need any specific adapters or modifications.

Has anyone successfully installed an NVMe U.3 SSD in an older Acer computer? If so, could you share what steps or components are needed to make it work? Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, not that I know off, an NVMe U.3 SSD is unlikely to work in an older legacy laptop. Legacy laptops typically support SATA SSDs, and the U.3 interface, which supports NVMe, SAS, and SATA protocols, is designed for more modern systems. The data lane pin-out for U.3 drives does not match older interfaces, making them incompatible with legacy systems.

We really need to know what your "older model" laptop is. As stated, the really old ones only support SATA drives, typically 2.5". Newer ones have an M.2 slot, but only support the SATA interface on those slots. Newer yet support NVMe on the M.2 slot. The drives you show are very expensive data center types and will not work on a consumer laptop. They require a cabled NVMe interface, which are only used on servers.
