Hello,

I own an Acer Aspire A315-41-R45R laptop with the following specifications:

  • Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 2500U
  • Graphics: Radeon Vega 8 Graphics
  • DDR4 SDRAM: 20GB (16GB + 4GB)
  • Storage: 1TB HDD (Currently installed)

I am planning to purchase a WD Green SATA SSD M.2 2280 - 480GB and use it as the primary drive for Windows 10, while keeping my 1TB HDD for other files.

Before proceeding, I have four questions:

  1. What is the maximum supported storage capacity for an M.2 SATA SSD in this laptop?
  2. Are there any compatibility issues with using the WD Green SATA SSD M.2 2280 on this model?
  3. Most manufacturers stopped producing 2280 M.2 SATA SSDs years ago, meaning all such models available today are old stock. Could the age of this drive affect its performance or longevity?
  4. Is there any hope for NVMe M.2 SSD support on this laptop, or is it strictly limited to SATA M.2 SSDs?

I would appreciate any guidance, especially from those who have experience with SSD upgrades for this model.

The Aspire A315-41 laptops which is a 2018 model which in those days anything above 256GB would have been very expensive and that is why Acer didn't fit the higher capacity drives to this laptop, but in its service guide the highest tested Acer SSD is a 256GB and its the "HYNIX SSD NAND256GB HFS256G39TND-N210ALF+HF - Acer part3: KN.2560G.022 which is a SATSA B&M Key drive which has a dual slot only and they don't list any PCIe Gen 3 x2 or x4 drives as compatible.

Remember that with drive capacities in windows operating systems the max capacity depends on the format of the drive for example:

    • MBR/Legacy format has a max capacity of 2.2TB
    • GUID (GPT) format has a max capacity of 8 petabytes (1 petabyte =1000TB)

So the WD Green 480GB (which also come in 1TB and 2TB) will also work perfectly as its got the "B&M end key drive" dual slot end and the A315-41 laptop will operate with those capacities.

An NVMe PCIe Gen 3 x2 lane or x4 lane M.2 SSD will not work as these M.2 drives have a single slot end and they are designated an "M key drive" and your A315-41 SSD slot is for a dual B&M end key only type drive which is only a SATA drive. Good luck and hope this helps you out.

Hi, you can upgrade the storage with a 1TB M.2 SATA SSD like the WD Green SATA SSD or Samsung 860 Evo, M.2 NVMe SSDs are not compatible with this model.

Could you please share the official product specifications or documentation that outlines the supported SSD types, maximum storage capacity, and compatibility details for the Acer Aspire A315-41-R45R
