I've got the above unit and I was informed that I could upgrade the processor from the current one to the i7-4790K. When I fitted the K the screen showed a low grade ACER logo then went off. Nothing else shown. I swapped the processor back for the original and it's fine. Does the K model require anything different? I'm using a 600w PSU, 12G Ram, GTX 970 and Windows 10 Home. Is there a compatibilty issue whith the motherboard or is the K cooked?

Cheers

The Core i7-4790K will not give you much more performance than what the oem i7=4790 cpu does, also the "K version" will run hotter as its TDP is 88W and needs more power and cooling, there is no advantage in upgrading the cpu on the TC-705 desktop. Also the Acer Aspire bios is not programmed to run this cpu that is why its not working.

Best upgrades after you have upgraded the ram, is to upgrade to a SATA 3 - 2.5" SSD and a the highest spec and suitable gpu to rum with the oem TC-705 300W PSU (see caption below) that will work with your oem PSU, from the list below that Acer fitted oem with the 300W PSU. In my opinion you should upgrade to a new Win-11 Aspire TC-1760 or above model that you can afford, instead of upgrading this old desktop. Good luck and hope this helps you out.

The "K" features aren't enabled in the BIOS, so it will give almost nothing in the way of a performance increase. There are plenty of other options to better your performance, we typically suggest a SSD first, then memory, then a GPU upgrade, then a new system before doing an CPU change…
