On Acer's site, the Aspire 3 is configurable with a max of 16GB RAM. Through the Acer store on Amazon, however, there is a model currently being sold with 40GB RAM installed. (Looks to be from a third party called Snow Bell.)

According to another post here, linked below, the max RAM capacity should be 32GB.

My housemate has been eyeing this machine. I'm curious if it's legit.

The A315-44P comes with 3x different mobos and soldered on cpu's RYZEN R35300U / RYZEN R55500U and the highest spec RYZEN R75700U that all have DDR4-3200MT/s CL22 at max 32GB (2x 16GB DDR4-3200MT/s) which Acer lists in this laptops service guide as the HYNIX SO-DIMM DDRIV 3200 16GB HMAA2GS6CJR8N-XN LF+HF 1024*16 RG C-die - Acer part #: KN.16G0G.036. Hope this helps you out further.

Total ram specs of the Aspire 3 A315-44P laptop, and as you can see you can have many diufferent ram combinations including just 16GB

Yes, I am aware of the reported size specifications of the socket.

Is this a hard limit? My housemate did end up purchasing the laptop and it does show 40GB RAM installed. I ran it through some games and benchmarks. And it holds up.

I haven't heard of manufacturers making 20GB RAM sticks, which is the only thing I can think of as to how this laptop managed to hit 40GB. It's just a really awkward number.

Yes, your housemate is likely using a RAM configuration of 1 stick of 32GB + 1 stick of 8GB, just like I do.

I believe the Acer Aspire A315-44P laptop can support up to a maximum of 64GB since it uses the Ryzen 7 5700U processor, which supports up to 64GB of RAM. Additionally, this laptop has 2 RAM slots, and for DDR4, the maximum capacity per stick is 32GB. If you install 2 sticks of 32GB RAM, the total will be 64GB.
