Any suggestions as to what to do? I contacted Microsoft tech support, and they had me do

a Windows 11 update which didn't correct the problem. They suggested that it might be a hardware issue.

Hi, just restore the system to a date when you still had sound: enter Restore in the Search bar and click on "Create a restore point" and "System Restore" with a date:

Kindly try updating your audio output driver with Generic device:

    1. Open Start Menu.
    2. Type Device Manager and Open it.
    3. Double-Click on the category "Audio inputs and outputs".
    4. Right click on your audio output driver and select "Update Driver".
    5. Next select "Browse my computer for drivers"
    6. Click on "Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer".
    7. Make sure the option "Show compatible hardware" is checked.
    8. Select Generic device and click Next.

If that doesn't help, try checking your audio output devices in Sounds > Playback, or to do this:

    1. Right-click on Speaker icon in the right-side of your taskbar and select Sounds.
    2. Click Playback tab and see if speaker device is listed there.
    3. If not, right-click and make sure the option "Show Disabled devices" is checked.
    4. If the said device is now visible, right-click on it and select Enable.
    5. To make it default, right-click on it again and select Set as Default device.

If that doesn't still help, try searching for latest audio controllers/drivers from your PC's manufacturer support website. Download and install them, if any.

If the issue still persist, try to check if the audio controller is disabled in BIOS > Advanced > Onboard/Device Configuration. If so, enable it. And If you need assistance on how to boot your PC into the BIOS please follow these steps:

    1. Restart your PC.
    2. Once the brand/OEM vendor's logo appears, press the keys Esc, F2, and Del simultaneously until the BIOS display shows up.
    3. Look for the audio controller or any related to sound options in the Advanced BIOS settings > Onboard/Device configuration and see if audio controller is disabled. If so, try enabling it, then click the button Exit and Save changes.

    Please see if that helps.

    • Open Device Manager and look for any warning symbols next to your audio device. These warnings can indicate driver problems.
    • Make sure all your drivers are updated, particularly those for your audio device. You can find the latest versions on the manufacturer's website.
    • Try uninstalling and then reinstalling your audio drivers. This can sometimes fix the issue.
    • Check that the correct playback device is selected as the default in your audio settings.
    • Disconnect any external audio devices to see if they’re causing interference.
    • If the issue persists, you might want to restore Windows to a previous point when everything was working fine. Alternatively, consider performing a full reset, but be sure to back up your data first.

Hopefully, this solves your audio problem!

This issue is caused by a defective update from Microsoft, KB5043145. The fix is two-fold, you uninstall the update, block it from reinstalling if needed, then re-install the Realtek audio drivers and utility from Acer's support site. That update has been causing all kinds of issues with many different hardware platforms, but on Acers so far it seems to be limited to benign problems like this one and USB port issues. With other platforms it can be as bad as BSODs during each boot attempt. :(
