Acer Aspire GX-781 i3 CPU upgrade. Can I upgrade the CPU to i5 or i7

Hi, I've had my GX-781 for around 7 or 8 years. It is going well but starting to struggle on newer games. I'm trying to upgrade it rather than buy/build a new PC from scratch.

Specs are: Acer Aspire GX-781 i3-7100 @ 3.90GHz, GTX 1050, 24GB RAM

Can I upgrade the CPU to i5 or i7, will the motherboard handle it and would I see performance improvements? Any other suggestions welcome! (RAM already upgraded).

Sure, you can drop any of the 7th gen CPUs in that has the same or lower TDP as your current CPU. Don't expect much system improvement though. In general we suggest first replacing a HDD with a SSD, then upgrading memory, then looking at the GPU requirements for your usage and only about tenth to upgrade the CPU… What type and size of drive do you have now?
