Brand new machine, seems alright, but I am deeply disappointed on the sound from built-in speakers. Anyone care to comment?

Hi, the issue is the very basic Realtek ALC255 audio chip in these laptops with tiny speakers, you cannot expect to get decent audio quality and volume without a good headset or external speakers with a built-in amplifier. Enable the equalizers in Media player and DTS and sound enhancement in Windows sound settings to boost the bass and volume.

There have been a number of different TravelMate P416 models over the years. Your full model number is usually on the same sticker as your serial number, it should look something like TMP416-xxx-xxxx. Different models may have different sound circuits.

You can also try FXSound installer for Windows. FxSound is built to provide a dynamic yet controlled increase in volume. Free open-source software to boost sound quality, volume, and bass. Including an equalizer, effects, and presets for customized audio from fxsound.com
