Your external HDD USB cable must be faulty or the Aspire laptop USB port is not making full contact with the USB external cable plug, as the external HDD should automatically connect as soon as you plug the cable into the Aspire laptop. Check Disk Management and see if the external HDD is shown there and the external HDD is initialized and has a drive letter, as you might need to initialize it and give the external HDD a drive letter.

In addition to the above: What USB case or USB adapter are you using, if USB2.0 the USB3.1 port may not detect it, look for a port that has a black insert instead of blue. Also, if the drive does not have a drive letter it won't be detected by Explorer, you can give it a drive letter in Windows Disk Management.

    Hi Emma,

If your external hard drive is showing up in Disk Management but not in File Explorer, it's possible that your flash drive needs to be assigned a drive letter. Here's what did I do to solve this issue:

Open Disk Management by right-clicking on the Start button and selecting "Disk Management" from the menu.

Locate your external hard drive in the list of disks in the lower part of the Disk Management window. It should be labeled as "Disk X" where X is a number.

Right-click on the partition on the external hard drive that has no drive letter and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths".

Click on the "Add" button and choose a drive letter from the list. You can use any available letter, but it's recommended to choose a letter towards the end of the alphabet (e.g., X, Y, or Z) to avoid conflicts with other drives.

Click "OK" to confirm the drive letter assignment.

After you assign a drive letter, the external hard drive should appear in File Explorer. If this doesn't work, there may be other issues with the drive, such as corruption or hardware failure. In that case, you may need to troubleshoot or repair the drive.

    Thanks for your answers.

Axxo - I have tried to follow your instructions but I am stuck on the part that says 'Right-click on the partition on the external hard drive that has no drive letter and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths". I'm not sure where I'm supposed to be right-clicking! Which bit is the partition? Here is a screen shot of the Disk Management Window. Can you help please? Thanks again!
