Hi Everyone,

The keyboard on my acer Spin 5 has stopped working (except for the letter 'Z')

I have tried several restarts, holding the Shift key on the right for 10 seconds

Switching of Sticky Keys, updating Keyboard drivers and other suggestions published on You Tube.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

David.

    Hi David,

Boot to Safe Mode with an external USB keyboard (in Windows Shift + Restart) and if the integrated KB works OK in Safe Mode, you have a driver problem. Uninstall the Standard PS/2 KB and 12C KB in Device manager and just reboot.

    Hi Puraw

Reinstalled and updated the drivers without success. Tried everything I can think of including reinstalling Windows with no success. I have noticed that that an image briefly appears on screen at re-start which shows the image that appears on the F7 key (attached photo).

Pressing this key with all the combination of Ctrl / Fn /Shift and Windows key has no effect. Do you have any suggestions?

    David.

Does an external keyboard work? That key is used to enable/disable the touchpad.

Yes, Billsey, I can plug in and use an external keyboard. The wierd thing is the 'z' key and the ` key work on the ACER Spin 5 integral kayboard.

I can't think of anything in the key matrix that would stop all but two keys from working. Typically when there's an issue there it affect combinations of four keys. Same thing with the cable between keyboard and motherboard, failures there typically means it doesn't work at all or something like only the backlight fails. It sounds like it's almost got to be software, either a driver that has screwed up big time or a keylogger or some other sort of malware that's broken and blocking the key presses…

    Hi Puraw

    Thank you for your response.

I didn't have a USB keyboard to hand so I thought I would just delete the Keyboard drivers that appear in Device manager which were Standard PS2 Keyboard and 2 x HID Keyboard Device files. There was no 12C KB file present in the Keyboard folder. I then restarted the ACER Spin 5 but with the same results touchscreen working but keyboard and touchpad inoperative except for the 'z' key and the ` symbol.

Any other ideas would be much appreciated.

    David.

Keyboard and touchpad use different software and different hardware…

OK, let's get down and dirty here… Which Spin 5 model do you have? There have been a lot of them over the years. Your full model number is usually on the same sticker as your serial number, it should look something like SP5xx-xxx-xxxx. Which OS is on it? How much memory and how big is the SSD? Has it ever been opened?

Thanks, Billsey. Decided to open the machine. Removed the main battery disconnected the screen Backlit and touchpad ribbons as well as the aux battery. Cleaned, dusted reassembled and voile the keyboard is working again. Whether it was a bad connection or tge aux battery resetting the bios don't know.

Thanks for your help and encouragement steering me down the path!
