I opened my laptop to clean yesterday, I removed the heatsink and applied thermal paste. But after that my laptop won't start. I didn't mess with anything else. When I click power button the fan spins for 1 second ,laptop keyboard lights up too for a second and stops then nothing else happens. What should I do?

Did you disconnect the main battery inside the laptop and the adapter? As those two things and especially the internal battery is essential as you could have shorted a capacitor or a mosat or switch in the main power rail of the laptop which has stopped your laptop from fully booting.

What I suggest is that you first do a hard Reset by removing the main battery, disconnect the RTC/BIOS battery and short its mainboard +&- pins to reset CMOS )see circled caption) and then leave the laptop like that for at least 1 hour (preferably overnight) as and if you are lucky, the laptop needs a reset as its got a frozen EC or a Chipset chip and this will unfreeze it, if this docent work then you will need to take your laptop to a technician as you have a more complex main power rail problem that only a technician can diagnose and fix. Good luck

RTC/BIOS battery plug position, its under the main battery in the caption below:

The mainboard RTC/BIOS battery plug (that is circled above) has two pins, one is the + and one is the - pin, so get a flat metal screwdriver or a tiny metal object to short the +&- pins together as this resets the CMOS of the laptop, that is what I meant, its very simple. 😀 then leave the laptop like that for at least one hour or preferably overnight as this will reset the laptop and should make it boot, if you havent cause any main power rail problems, then take your laptop to a technician to fix.

See the red and black wires shown in the image near the center of the circle? Those are what needs to be plugged in correctly.
