Hello, I recently purchased the Acer Nitro 16 AN16-41. I want to upgrade one of the SSD's and was looking at the Samsung 990 Pro with heatsink

I'm not having any definitive answers on whether or not it'll fit. Does anyone know?

It won't fit, there is the same 990Pro SSD without that huge heatsink, get that.

Just some additional advice for your Nitro AN16-41 laptop, as you don't need a heatsink on the M.2 SSD drive for your Nitro AN16-41 laptop, as if you add an additional Gen 4 x4 M.2 drive (see caption below) like the Samsung 990 Pro Gen 4x4 then Acer uses a graphite foil wrap to cool the Nitro AN16-41 oem M.2 drives like below, buy this graphite foil and wrap the Samsung 990 Pro M.2 drive with this foil as its just as good as a heatsink. Acer also wraps the DIMM ram modules of the AN16-41laptop with this foil (see caption below). Another solution is to stick a high-grade thermal pad on top of M.2 and DIMM rams modules to dissipate heat if you can't get the Acer graphite foil. Good luck and hope this helps you out. Btw, the DIMM modules are also wrapped with foil also

I suppose this is exactly the same for AN16-73?

Are there brands/models that are recommended for this model? (use: second disc, mostly data disk but maybe swap for photoshop and occasional VM)

These are the M.2 and RAM foil wraps listed in the AN16-72 service guide, so search the part numbers below and use those products. The 005 is the M.2 wrap and the 001 is the RAM wrap. Good luck.

Sorry, I did express myself poorly. I as referring to the SSD. Wondering if there are any models/brands that are considered better for the Nitro in terms of heating and general performance. I'd be inclined to avoid those who require by default some big heatsinks thinking they are better for desktop PCs but maybe I'm overparanoid since you said the foil would work just as fine.

The best drives imo are the Samsung drives as I've used them for many years in 2.5" SSD format or M.2 SSD format, and for your Nitro M.2 drive that has a boot drive Gen 4 x4 lane I would use the Samsung 990 Pro NVMe type drive that comes in 1TB / 2TB and 4TB capacities which is the fastest read/write drive on the market, but I would also suggest that you either buy the graphite wrap above or cover this drive with a high end thermal pad on top of the drive to disperse heat, as all M.2 SSD boot rives that are used constantly heat up and need to be cooled, so be aware of that also.
