When I install a second drive the computer stops posting, removing either (m.2 or 2.5 inch sata) allows the computer to post.

No. Me using linux is not the problem as the computer doesn't pass bios.

Yes. I am using the latest bios (1.15)

Give us more details of your computer model number first as if your computer stops posting and removing either the M.2 or 2.5-inch SATA drive allows it to post, there could be a few potential issues to consider:

    1. Compatibility Issues:
      • M.2 drives come in two main types: SATA and NVMe. The M.2 slot on your motherboard may support either one or both types. If you’re using an M.2 NVMe drive and it’s not compatible with your motherboard, it might prevent the system from posting.
      • Similarly, if you’re using a 2.5-inch SATA drive, ensure that it’s compatible with your system.
    2. Faulty Drive:
      • It’s possible that one of the drives (either the M.2 or the 2.5-inch SATA) is faulty. Try testing each drive individually to identify the problematic one.
    3. BIOS Settings:
      • Check your BIOS settings to ensure that the correct drive is selected as the boot drive. Sometimes incorrect settings can prevent the system from posting.
    4. Motherboard Issues:
      • There might be issues with the M.2 or SATA slots on your motherboard. Inspect the slots for any physical damage or debris.
      • If you have another M.2 slot, try using that one to see if the issue persists.
    5. Power Supply Unit (PSU):
      • Insufficient power supply can cause booting problems. Make sure your PSU provides enough power for all components, including the drives.
    6. Cable Connections:
      • Ensure that all cables (both power and data) are securely connected to the drives and the motherboard.

Remember to troubleshoot step by step, starting with the most straightforward solutions. If the issue persists, consider seeking professional assistance or consulting your motherboard’s manual for specific guidance. Good luck!

Sorry, I forgot to provide system specs, I am using a Predator PH315-54 model notebook with the preinstalled 512 gb samsung m.2 drive and a 120 gig crucial 2.5 inch ssd. I know they both work because if I attach the 2.5 inch ssd while my computer is running, it can be found at /dev/sda. So my computer can handle both. My only other idea is that it might be bios related but I can't find a setting related to drives in the advanced bios section at all.
