Hi everybody,

Since two days, my ACER Aspire A515-57G became very slow. I made some checks, and does not see any resource over loaded. Neither memory, Disk or anything, it's juste slow. And sometimes, it recovers its normal speed during some hours.

The only thing I detected is a malfunctioning device, the Volume Management Device from Intel, see under the message found in the Performance Monitor of Windows.

Do you think this could be the reason ? If yes, what can I do to solve that ? The computer has been bought 13 months ago.

Message from Performance Monitor Windows :

Details: The device, Intel RST VMD Managed Controller 09AB, is reporting a bad status value. This device will not be available until the issue is resolved. The Plug and Play ID for this device is PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_09AB

Open Device Manager and check for yellow exclamation triangles. uninstall these devices and any device marked as "Other devices" or "Unknown devices". Reboot and check the system performance. If no improvement, restore the system to a date before this happened. type Restore in Search and click on "Create a restore point", at the top left click on "System restore" and select a date. If you never saved a restore point or System restore fails, "Reset this PC" without losing your files option (type Reset in Search). Also uninstall all trial versions of programs, bloatware, 3rd-party browsers and AV programs like McAfee (requires an uninstaller you can download from McAfee website). Disable syncing, you may be backing up to Cloud on a slow internet link.

Is your adapter/charger plugged in 24/7 and the battery 100% charged, maybe the power is throttled by the Battery Saver or because of CPU/GPU overheating, check that too.

Thank you for your answer. I checked on my Device Manager, and I do not have any yellow exclamation triangles, even in front of the potential problematic devices, see ps1.jpg. I even tried to uninstall and re-install the drivers, but no effect (tried 2 different versions).

Unhappily, I do not have any Restore point. And I first want to try some more things before re-installing the PC (have some softwares to configure).

A fact interesting is that I updated the BIOS from the Acer site, and I thought the problem solved, but it worked only during about 2 hours. And now, when I switch off the computer, it is fast againg during some time. I also checked the sensors and didn't detect a too high temperature.

Do you think it is interesting to open it and remove some dust inside ?

    Thanks,

I also tried a re-install of version 11 23H2 of Windows, through the System/Recovery/Fix problems using Windows Update.

Took some time, this morning, PC is ok, I'll see if it last more, crossing fingers …

I removed dust inside (but not a lot of …) , but had a new idea : I have an USB-C adapter on which I connect a second screen through HDMI and an Ethernet cable. Maybe it heats and is defect after some time …. Trying without it, I'll post the results a bit later.

Here are some ways to make your Acer laptop run faster:-

    Windows settings:

    a. Disable unnecessary startup programs: Go to Task Manager, click on the Startup tab, and disable any programs you do not need to start automatically when the laptop starts.
    b. Uninstall unused programs: Go to Control Panel, click on Programs and Features, and uninstall any programs you do not use regularly.
    c. Clear temporary files: Go to the Disk Cleanup tool and transparent temporary files, including system files, to free up disk space.
    d. Disable visual effects: Go to System Properties, click Advanced System Settings, and then click on the Advanced tab. Click on the Settings button under the Performance section, and select Adjust for best performance.
    e. Update drivers: Ensure all drivers, including graphics, sound, and chipset drivers, are up-to-date.
    f. Use antivirus software: Regularly run an antivirus scan to keep your laptop free from malware.
    BIOS settings:
    a. Disable secure boot: Some Acer laptops have secure boot enabled, which can slow down the boot process. Disable secure boot in the BIOS to speed up the boot process.
    b. Enable AHCI mode: Some Acer laptops have SATA compatibility mode enabled, which can slow down disk performance. Enable AHCI mode in the BIOS for improved disk performance.
    c. Adjust power settings: Adjust the power settings in the BIOS to optimize performance. You can typically choose between performance, battery life, and balanced modes.
    d. Enable virtualization technology: Some Acer laptops come with virtualization technology disabled, which can slow down performance. Enable virtualization technology in the BIOS to speed up performance.
    e. One of the most common reasons for a slow computer is programs running in the background. Remove or disable any TSRs and startup programs that automatically start each time the computer boots. To see what programs are running in the background and how much memory and CPU they are using: Open "Task Manager".

Thanks for your ideas. As the computer works fine for some time before the problem appears and no resources is overloades (nor disk, nor memory, nor CPU), I'm searching on other things currently.

Problem appeared again without my USB-C adapter, trying with another HDMI cable.

Because it seems that the problem only appears when a second screen is connected.
