Aspire 514-54-725K Slow and only powers with mains

My 3 year old Aspire 514-54-725K will not turn on without ac adapter. When plugged in and off battery light is orange and even when left for 24 hours remains orange.
When plugged in it eventually turns on but remains slow. Battery says 33% charged but that stays the same, turns off completely if lead removed.
Have tried:

Restart and windows updates.
updated to latest bios. Flashed ok but issue remains.
pushing in battery power reset button underneath.
removing drivers for mains and battery from device manager.
booting to bios and reset defaults.
Alternative laptop power lead as daughter has same model, no change.

Ideas welcome.

Try to replace the battery with your daughter's laptop battery, if the laptop models are identical. If that battery also won't charge try the Power drain and CMOS reset routine:
Power drain + CMOS reset: Open the back of the laptop and disconnect the battery cable from the motherboard. Locate the CMOS module (with 2 twisted wires Red and Black) and remove the coin battery. Shorten the +/- terminals inside the CMOS capsule for 2 seconds with a bended paperclip and put the coin battery back with the + sign facing up, close the CMOS capsule. Remove the one RAM SODIMM module and secure it firmly back in the RAM slot. Next, press the Power Button on the keyboard for 10-15 seconds after that reconnect the battery cable to the motherboard. Close the laptop, plug-in the adapter and try to boot.

Do a battery report and see your Battery Health as that is the most frequent culprit, but for a 3 years old laptop the battery should not be damaged or faulty. Software Issues: Sometimes power management settings or updates can interfere with your laptop’s ability to run on battery. Check if your laptop turns off immediately after unplugging it. Hardware Glitches: Faulty components like the motherboard or the charging circuit can lead to this issue. Power Cord Problems: A damaged or malfunctioning power cord might prevent proper battery charging.

Here are some general steps to troubleshoot and potentially fix the issue, good luck and hope this helps you out.

    Power Management Settings:

Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options on your laptop.

Ensure it’s set to a “Balanced” power plan. Sometimes adjusting these settings can help.

    Update Battery Driver:

    Open Device Manager.

Expand “Batteries” and right-click on “Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery”.

    Choose "Update driver".

I have tried both suggestions. Laptop works well without any battery fitted but when it is connected it boots but slowly and runs slowly.

Have tried what Puraw says and connected battery will see if it changes charge from the 33% and if runs at any speed. Taking a minute to load up excel for example.

Otherwise may get a new battery and try that.
