My laptop was getting very hot when plugged in. HWMonitor showed that the processor cores were running at maximum speed and the temperature was 97oC. It was actually too hot to have on my lap. When running on battery things looked normal.

I have reduced the maximum power plugged in to 90% and on battery to 80% and everything is OK now. Core temperature is around 55oC and processor speed around 2.2MHz.

Clearly something wrong with the BIOS or whatever controls the processor speed.
