With an old laptop like this and if its left unused for a long period of time components can freeze and/or deteriorate e.g. like its EC and bios chips that need resetting and components like the ram, cpu and HDD need to be taken out and cleaned and with the cpu repasted. The symptoms that you are getting "SATA PORT O WDC WD3200BPVT-22ESLOCK" is related to the boot HDD that is either faulty or not engaging, take the HDD out clean its connecting SATA pins at the drive end and at the laptop end and see if the HDD boots?

If it doesn't then do a Hard Reset by taking the main battery out and then take the back HDD and bios battery and ram access cover off your Aspire 5742Z laptop, take the bios battery out and then shot the bios batteries +&- pins with a metal object (to reset CMOS) and take the ram out, leave the laptop like that for at least 1 hour (overnight is preferable) then after this time, replace all components but only put 1x ram module into its slot (as it could be that the ram module could be faulty also) and reboot. See if the laptop reboots, as this resets the laptops EC and bios chips which govern the boot order and most of the functions of your laptop. If this doesn't work then its your HDD and its OS that are faulty and that is why your laptop doesn't boot, so replace the 2.5" drive with an SSD and do a clean install of Win-10. Good luck and hope this helps you out.

Just a suggestion with your Aspire 5742Z laptop and if you want to keep this laptop. your Aspire 7542Z is a Socket G1 type laptop with an Arrandale type cpu, this cpu can be upgraded from its oem Acer fitted top cpu spec which is the i5-580M type to the more powerful i7-640M and also if you don't have 8GB (2x DDR3-1333Mhz) then upgrade to this spec ram as you need these specs to operate Win-10 properly. Good luck and hope this helps you out.

HDD and RTC battery positions, rest the bios by taking the rtc/bios battery out and shot its +&- pins.
