AN515-44 Nitro: battery and Care Center issues

I own an Acer Nitro AN515-44 for more than 2 years now and it seems to me there is a design problem with its battery/charger system. Not only because of my own laptop, but because I can find some similar complaints here and elsewhere on the web.

I have just clicked the [Sensitive content] X button of the "Battery Calibration" functionality after waiting for MORE than 24 HOURS for something that never comes. It was the second time I tried. This time, I created a new Windows energy profile to ensure the laptop would not suspend while idle nor hibernate or anything alike when the battery was drained below 3%.

I've done what I've been told. When the batttery gauge jumped from 4% to 0%, I connected back the charger and the computer is charged since. The battery reportedly went back to 100% hours ago now but I still have only the "Calibrating" and spinner message. (Names might be different: my Windows and Care Center are not in English). The only result, it seems, is to have my battery lifetime a bit more reduced with the process.

By the way, Care Center is sluggish, buggish and works how and when it wants. Yes, I often check for the newest version (it seems it became abandonware actually). Yes, I have reinstalled, reboot, reinstalled, run as admin, all the things you've read somewhere.

Sometimes I am able to set the 80% battery charge limit. Then it works until a Windows Update appears. Then the charge limit option is not even shown anymore. It disappears, along with the "Battery Calibration" option, until I open the laptop, disconnect the battery and reconnect it.

I discovered I have to do the same when the next oddity happens: battery shows 100% charge, I disconnect the charger, then pluft — computer turns off as if there is no battery. And will not turn on again unless plugged to AC. But if I disconnect/reconnect the battery it magically works, for some 1h30 without AC (i.e: battery is fine).

From the number of related messages here and elsewheres I can presume that battery and/or power circuitry *is a problem* in Acer Nitro and some other models, but I have not found anything about an action about it from Acer. Do you users know of anything? A firmware or driver update, a recall, battery replacement, circuitry revision, announcement, anything?

I must say I am kind of disappointed with that because I had Acer in my highest regards since I bought an Acer One ZG5 netbook in 2009 that works until that day and remains in great shape. The Nitro performs very well, but simply does not feel that solid.

Acer Care Center is not working properly (hangs) in Windows11 and is replaced by AcerSense. You can also try Acer Care S. on the Windows Store. The 80% battery Charge limiting feature is no longer included in the latest Acer Care app or has been disabled. Do not use this function as it may cause power issues. Leave your power adapter plugged in 24/7 without any consequences for your battery lifespan, in fact it is recommended to keep your battery fully charged. https://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch001587.htm

Li-Ion batteries do not have the so-called "Memory Effect" based on a NASA report about old Ni-Cad batteries, so you don't need to "calibrate" Li-Ion batteries, but you do need to complete one full charge cycle with a new battery and after a Clean install of Windows: Disable the Hibernate and Fast Startup options in Windows Power Plan and reset the Windows Power Plan to factory defaults. Shutdown and close the lid. Remove all USB devices and monitors/docking stations and plug-in the power adapter, charge till the amber battery LED turns blue and wait an extra 10 minutes. Open the lid and boot to Windows, verify the battery meter reads 100% charged, unplug the adapter and work all day with your laptop till it turns itself off (don't panic, you won't lose any data). Close the lid and plug-in the adapter, charge again till the amber LED turns blue + the extra 10 minutes. That's it.
