Hi,

I am looking to upgrade my acer laptop existing HDD 1TB hard drive to SSD 1 TB. I opened up the hard drive compartment of my laptop and saw there is an existing spare M2 port I can use. I looked into relevant threads and found out I can use NVMe gen2 or 3. I Might not be able to maximize the performance out of it but since it is cheap and similar to SATA drive type price so why not. My questions are as follows:

  1. I have a hard drive I am looking to purchase but is gen 4 is there a way to confirm that it will work before ordering it?

Here is the link:

2. Will I be able to use SSD as my primary drive which helps my laptop process faster and existing HDD as secondary drive?

3. I can follow instructions but this is my first time doing it so need a good guide on how to move/clone things(older applications, windows, files etc.) to new SSD.

Any help is really appreciated.

The M.2 slot supports SATA-3 SSD, A LiteOn CV1-8B265 SSD is installed as the system drive. It is an M.2 Sata-3 model (2280) that has a capacity of 256 GB. You may be able to install a M.2 NVMe Gen3 SSD, but you need to check the Maximum link width of your PCI Express root ports using HWiNFO64 if the port is x2. The speed of a Gen3 x 2 won't be any faster than a SATA-3 SSD, I recommend that replace the HDD "spinner: for a 2.5" Sata-3 Samsung 870 Evo V_NAND SSD. To install the 2.5" SSD is easy, just back up the HDD to an external backup USB drive, install the SSD and restore the backup to the new SSD.

Thanks for your response. I am not sure about the PCI Express port so please see below and let me know if I can use gen 4 1 TB SSD with current specs.(please see the link in above post).

The maximum link width is 2X that is the slowest possible PCIe lane you can get for a NVMe, as I wrote before you gain nothing with a NVMe on that port it will have the same speed as a Sata-3 SSD. If you insist using a NVMe SSD buy Gen3 256GB, not Gen4. I recommend a Sata-3 M.2 SSD that has been tested on this laptop (see above) or the 2.5" Sata-3 SSD like the Samsung 870 EVO up to 1TB.
