I have an older Acer laptop who's S/N and SNID are not recognized on Acer support. Why?

This laptop is almost 10 years old, but in great shape. It was purchased new by my sister-in-law. I am trying to do routine maintenance on this machine, but the support website will not recognize the S/N or SNID. I even downloaded the Acer serial number tool to pull the info directly from the laptop itself. Allows cut and paste for both numbers, so I am sure this is not a typing problem. Any advice?

    Windows8.1 platform is no longer supported by Acer and Microsoft, there are no drivers (or BIOS) on the Acer Support site for your laptop. Continue using your current drivers and BIOS or when it is offered online try to upgrade to Windows10 (if the CPU is compatible), Windows10 will install drivers. I don't think you can activate a clean install version of Windows10 (ISO file) with a Windows8.1 product key anymore but you can try that too with a bootable USB flash drive.

    While this machine was purchased with windows 8, it was supported in the upgrade to windows 10 about a year after she purchased it new from Acer. Windows update keeps many of the component drivers up-to-date, but the bios is very old. Windows 10 was released 16 months after this laptop was manufactured, so I am surprised that Acer stopped supporting this machine while windows 10 is still supported by MS.

    Even so, why would they not accept the S/N SNID and advise that this is not supported? We need to stop fulling the landfills!

    Yes, I've experienced that too, as Acer stops support for old laptops, and they don't come up on their site or if you put their SNID or S/N in your Acer account, as they come up with different laptops models or don't come up at all. I've tried to add two old laptops to my account list, but every time I put their SNID or S/N they come up as totally and more modern laptop, so there must be some problem with these old laptops numbers.

    They make good products, but it is a shame they stop supporting useful machines running supported operating systems. I've not experienced this with Dell, HP or Lenovo. This is my first experience with Acer and I am disappointed.

    Consider migrating to a newer Windows11 laptop like most of us do and keep the legacy laptop as backup. 😉

    @FerguDude

    You can put the model number of the laptop instead of S/N. Sometimes, finding drivers by searching with S/N will not produce the result correctly.
