I am getting really discouraged. I do not want to spend 70 bucks on 2x8gb 4800 mhz ram, that is just awful. It sounds like any XMP ram will just cause the PC not to boot.

There will be no problem booting with XMP memory, it just may not run as fast as you would like. Stick with 4800 memory and you should be just fine. The 16GB sticks are cheaper per gig than the 8GB sticks, so you might want to spend a few dollars more for them.
