How to know exactly if battery is dead in Acer A515-51G

I have an Acer A515-51G (i5 8250u, MX150 GPU), with a 48wh battery, which is about 6 years old. Naturally, the battery backup had become a bit less due to age, but till November 2023 it gave around 1.5 hours of usage on battery.

But in December 2023 & Jan 2024, I could not use it very much, and when I opened it, battery was at 0% and could not start without plugging in. Then after charging and some usage for a few days, I was getting about 30-45 minutes of battery life and also disabling the battery driver stopped it from shutting down on turning off charger, and then 3 weeks ago it stopped charging. I have to use it plugged in continuously (like a desktop) and it switches off as soon as I turn off charger switch.

I opened it up and disconnected the battery to verify if the charger is faulty. But it ran fine with the battery disconnected just on charger power. But the physical battery pack does not have any visual damage (not swollen or deformed etc.)

Has the battery totally died? Or can it be somehow externally charged and then re connected?

It's likely dead. You can try to reset it with the pinhole switch, but I wouldn't expect much.

Batteries can be sometimes revived, if you have the necessary equipment. However, spending money on that (or on a technician) doesn't seem like a good investment, considering its age. Luckily, your laptop runs even without a battery, so just use it in stationary mode, or buy a replacement battery.

After 6 years any battery will be dead, Lead-Acid car batteries or dry ones like your Li-Ion battery, even when just stored.

How to check the battery life on your laptop

1. Click the Start menu on your laptop.
2. Search for PowerShell and then click on the PowerShell option that appears.
3. Once it appears, type the following command: powercfg /batteryreport.
4. Press Enter, which will generate a report that includes information on your battery health.

I am attaching the battery report. Battery is most likely dead, I will try to find a replacement.

It was working for some time again last week when I deleted the battery drivers, charged for a long time but again its dead.

I noticed on the attached battery Report that the maximum battery charged capacity never exceeded 80% of the design capaciry? Do you or did you by any chance used the 80% battery limiter option in Acer Care? @Puraw No, I do not have Acer care installed, and no battery charging limit. So I think the battery is degraded. I will try to find one locally as I am not in US. Thanks.

Hello, commenting again on the post because the laptop behavior is confusing. I could not replace the battery yet due to unavailability in my town, but I disabled the battery driver just to check, and I have been using the laptop with disabled battery and charger driver, and the laptop is working almost 2 hours without plugging in! And when I plug in, it charges continuously albeit I cannot see the percentage due to disabling driver.

I don't know how is this possible, because if I enable the driver, it again gives the earlier issue of intermittent charging.
