I am trying to upgrade the RAM from 8GB total to 20GB but after trying to do so, it won't boot. After reading the specs, the motherboard can support up to a maximum of 12GB so tried an 8GB stick of RAM but still won't boot but the original 4GB still works. Is there something I'm missing or is it no longer able to be upgraded?

You can upgrade up to 20GB (4GB soldered+16GB in the slot) with a DDR4 2666MHz module, avoid any module with XMP profiles. Run this command without having anything in the removable SODIMM slot: wmic memorychip list full and copy the part number, get exactly the same brand, same rank, CL and speed as the soldered module just a larger capacity and you should be OK.

Below is the Memory Combinations for the A315-56 laptop, populate the 1x ram slot in the below manner and if you have 4GB onboard soldered ram in your A315-56 laptop then adding a 16GB DDR4-2666MHz type ram will work, as that is what Acer lists as the compatible ram and size of this laptop. Good luck and hope this helps you out some more.
