Aspire 5732z battery charges but will not turn on

I recently changed the USB ports on my laptop. Once I reassembled the laptop, it would show signs of charging the battery (via the LED light) but when I tried to turn it on, the LED charging light turned off and nothing happened. I would have to unplug the battery and put it back in again for the charging LED light to come back on.

One thing I didn't do when reassembling was to replace the thermal past on the CPU. Would this cause the laptop to not turn on? Otherwise, nothing seems damaged on the motherboard or any cables I unplugged and replugged. Any ideas?

Thank you,

Toby

Your laptop needs a new battery, a charging light is not an 100% sign that your battery is charging, especially for a 14 years old laptop. Get a new 4400mAh type battery and change the charger adapter also if its not charging 100%, as your laptop must have either a DC port problem or the battery/adapter problem.

Also and if the cpu paste is dried out and old and you don't change it then the cpu will get hot and overtime the cpu gets damaged, so you could have a damaged cpu, check that also. Use a cotton swab with alcohol to completely clean the old paste off the cpu top surface and then use a good thermal paste to replace the old paste with the new paste amount like its shown below.

Also and for better performance, upgrade the cpu to a more powerful Socket P Core 2 Duo T9400 type cpu and fit a new 2.5" SSD drive and upgrade the ram to this laptops max ram of 4GB (at 2 modules of 2GB DDR-667MHz) DDR2-667MHz ram modules,

The below information is from your Aspire 5732Z SG and how you do a cpu change and paste and the ram and power specs:

Thank you for this. So even though the computer was working fine prior to the USB port replacement (apart from battery not charging as well as it could due to charging port being loose), you think it its the battery or charger ports?

I'll change the port and the battery and get back to you - thank you

Do you know why does the charging light turn off after I press the power button (with or without cable)?
