I need to type documents in German and French and so have to use accented characters. How do I turn NumLock on to use characters such as a-Umlaut (Alt+Function+132 in Word, OpenOffice and Notepad) or e-grave (usually Alt+Function+130 in Word, OpenOffice and Notepad)?

My model is a Swift 3 N21 C2 & SF314-512-72NG

The newer model seemed to have removed the Numlock key so you might have to get an external keyboard to use the Numlock function.

It looks like the SF314-512-72NG SKU is one of the US models, so uses the US/International keyboard layout. If you notice, it doesn't have a numeric keypad called out on the keys, like they used to do. You either need an external numeric keypad or to just use the number keys across the top with these models. There is no NumLk function…

    Hi Billsey

Thanks for your answer. My keyboard is English - the sterling symbol (ÂŁ) is with the number 3 and the # symbol is to the left of the enter key on the right.

I do see there is no numeric keypad. My question is that if I use a USB external keypad and press its NumLock will it be recognised as such by the computer? And so, for example Alt+Fn+130 on the numeric keypad produce a French e-acute (Ă©)?

Yes, the Numlock function still works with the external keyboard. I tested on the 14-inch model and it shows the Numlock/unlock symbol on the screen.

Yes, an external keyboard or keypad should work just as you expect. Your model must be the UK version if it has that keyboard, not the US version Google was telling me…
