So as the title says, I'm no longer seeing a GPU. It all started a few weeks ago with a memory upgrade and fan cleaning, which resulted, due to me being careless, in a broken fan and a broken antenna connector on my WiFi card. The fan was an easy fix, but the WiFi card, well…

I ordered two WiFi cards. One, a generic Intel AX201NGW that I could get overnight. But, me being the obsessive compulsive [Edited content] that I am, wanted a "genuine" Intel "Killer" brand so I could use the Killer Intelligence Center that I never actually used, etc, etc. So I also ordered an AX1690i.

I got the AX201, installed it and everything worked good again. About a week later I got the AX1690i. I replaced the AX201 with the 1690i and could never get it to work. It showed up as an unknown network card and I could never get drivers to load. I did a lot of Googling and saw people having a lot of similar problems, most blaming lack of CNVIo2 support at the M.2 port. Since the original card was a 1650i, and the generic AX201 is a CNVIo2 card, I figured that shouldn't be the problem but eventually I realized I was being OCD and there was no reason not to just use the one that worked, so I put the AX201 back in. I had a hell of a time getting the antenna wires connected but I finally did and put it all back together.

And about a day later realized that I had no GPU.

So I've been doing a lot of searching on this problem and it seems common. There are more solutions suggested than Carter's got little pink pills however.

But most of them seem to revolve around a few themes so here is what I've tried.

  1. Install the latest drivers. I can't do that because as far as it's concerned there is no GPU. The NVidia driver installer stops and tells me such and won't continue.
  2. Reset the BIOS. There are at least a dozen different methods suggested for resetting the BIOS but none seems to apply to my specific laptop. There's no little hole to stick anything in. There's no panel to remove the battery, etc. So what I did was to open the back, disconnect the main battery and the little coin battery and leave it overnight. Then in the morning I reconnected the batteries and started it up. It took a little longer to start loading Windows so I assumed it did something. And it had reset all the settings back to the defaults. But it didn't fix anything.
  3. I wanted to reflash the BIOS in case something was corrupt, but I can't figure out how to do that. The BIOS update software simply tells me I already have the current BIOS and does nothing. There are a lot of instructions on how to reflash the BIOS, either the current or an older one. But none of them seem to apply to my specific laptop or I just can't figure them out.
  4. Complete fresh install of Windows. I did this. In fact, I did this yesterday with a whole new SSD (I wanted to preserve my current setup) and still no GPU.

So I need some advice. Is there something I'm missing? What is the correct way on my specific laptop to reset the BIOS? Can I reflash the BIOS and if so, how? Or anything else that may help. Or if you want, just laugh at me for screwing it up in the first place. 25 years in IT, retired for another 20 and I didn't used to make stupid mistakes like this. I must be getting old.

If you need more info please ask. At this point my last resort is professional repair. I bought this laptop refurbished from Wal-Mart and I bought one of their extended warranties, so that should be doable. But that probably means sending it off for a week or so and I really don't want to have to go without a computer for that long. I pretty much run my life with this thing, since my brain doesn't seem to work any longer.

Thank you.
