Hi,
I have an Acer Aspire 3 A317-51-520A. According to most RAM producers' web-sites it should be possible to upgrade the memory to a total of 12, 20, or even 36 GB. But I can't find any empty slot for another RAM card. And the existing 8 GB RAM card seems to be solded.
How can I upgrade the memory?

This guide is for internal use only and I cannot provide the whole guide for the public. I can only show some parts if you need help with the disassembly process.

There is no Aspire 3 laptop with "36GB" RAM. You only have 1 removable RAM slot, you can upgrade the memory up to 20GB, 4GB is soldered on the motherboard and either a 4gb or 8GB DDR4 module is in that removable slot. replace that one for an 8GB or 16GB DDR4 module, see this link: https://www.crucial.com/compatible-upgrade-for/acer/aspire-3-a317-51-35hw

    Hi Puraw,

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I think that you are wrong about what is soldered in the motherboard. According to the system information there are 8 GB RAM build-in. I can find the slot, but I can't take out the RAM card, and I can't find any slot # 2. I fear there is only one slot. Remember, my PC is a ...-51-520A, and not the ...-51-35hw you are referring to. If I search my specific type number at the Crucial site I get no reply...

Do you think I'm right that there is no spare slot available..? In that case, how can I solve that problem..?

This model has 8GB onboard RAM, meaning it is soldered on the motherboard and cannot be taken out.

There is only one empty RAM slot that can add up to 16GB or 24GB in total.

    Thanks for your kind reply.

I'm happy that I'm not all wrong about the RAM capacity - the soldered as well as the total. It's only how to mount the extra 8 or 16 GB I can't figure out. I don't understand the red marking on your picture and can't find anything that looks like the soldered slot. Can you explain or give me another hint..?

Don't worry about the marking of that picture.

Here is the RAM that is soldered onto the motherboard. The 4 large chips.

This is the empty RAM slot that you can upgrade:

Thanks for your patience with me. Unfortunately the empty RAM slot in your blue marking is not empty in my PC. This is where the soldered RAM is mounted, and I can’t find any similar empty slot.

I also wish you a nice day, very well knowing that I do almost everything to ruin it...

Can you check by going to the Task Manager, Performance tab, and the memory section to see if the DIMM slot has been taken up?

Here's a screenshot of the info in the memory section. I'm very surprised to see that 2 of 2 slots are used. In that case there must be 4 GB on the motherboard and 4 GB in the normal RAM slot. Don't you think? The question is then: How do I exchange the RAM block in the "normal" Ram slot? It looks very much soldered. But maybe I'm wrong… I just don't dare the risk to damage it as long as I don't know what I'm doing…

Here is the procedure to take out the RAM stick. Be sure to unplug the battery first.

Thank you very much for your great help. Without you I wouldn’t have been able to upgrade my RAM.

The module clips are different to those in my earlier PC’s. That together with the wrong information I got about the installed RAM content at only 4GB and the RAM producers’ missing recognition of my ACER model made me very confused and afraid of doing something wrong.

Once again: Many thanks for your help.

BTW: Can you tell me where to download the manual you showed me images from..?
