My Acer Nitro 5 arrived on 12/06 and is running perfectly, but all at once it freezes the screen. It's the second time and now I can't even force it to shut down, not using the power button or CTRL+ALT+Del or anything, it's been there for 30 minutes and will probably stay there until the battery runs out.

No, don't deplete the battery, force (abort) the system to shut down by holding down the power button key for >5 seconds. You have a bad program that hangs or corrupted system file(s). After the laptop has shut down plug in the power adapter and charge till the amber charge LED turns blue. don't use the laptop. Wait a while, then boot to Windows, if you get in the Repair mode screen try to restart in Safe Mode either directly (Troubleshoot menu, Restart Safe Mode with networking) or by pressing Alt+F10 when you see the Acer logo. Connect to the internet and open the Command Prompt as administrator, paste this in the command window:
Dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth and press the Enter key. This must complete successfully or rerun. Then paste this in the same command prompt window: SFC /scannow and press the Enter key, this will repair the system files, rerun till it ends with "….did not find any integrity violations". That's it.
