Hi there,

I have this 5 yr old Acer Nitro 5 AN515-51 gaming Laptop which just died without any warning. Took it to techie who said it would cost $250 to diagnose & fix but he did say the power port was wobbly which I decided to replace. That did not help. Figured the power adapter had gone bust and bought a new adapter. That didn't help either.

I have been reading about the way the power function is designed. Apparently unplugging the battery and directly hooking to the power port to the adapter should work but they say it is not recommended. Direct power did not work either.

Do you think it is the battery? It has been 5 years and probably needs replacing. I have placed an order for it as well. If that does not do anything then this laptop is toast most likely. Expensive laptop for sure. No more ACER for sure. Saw my drive corrupted twice and lost a whole bunch. Blue screens too.

Any thoughts?

Vish

    Your battery will be depleted after 5-years, best to keep track of your battery condition with Windows Battery Report and replace it after 3-4 years or before when you notice that the capacity has dropped too fast over a short period. When you install the new battery don't forget to do one full charge cycle before turning on the laptop, plug in the adapter and charge till the amber charge LED turns blue, wait 5-10 minutes and boot to Windows, confirm the battery is 100% charged, unplug the adapter and work till the system shuts down automatically, close the lid and plug in the adapter, don't turn on the laptop, charge again till the amber charge LED turns blue and wait 5-10 minutes. That's it.

    Here is the update. I got a new battery and the power port but none of it seems to work. Took it to another shop who now says the power connector on the motherboard has bent pins so I need a new motherboard.

    My question is, Acer says the laptop can be used without a battery but does not recommend it. What does that mean? Can it be used without a battery or does it have to have the battery? I have no desire to use the laptop as a gaming device.

    What are your thoughts?

    Thanks

    @jaz89

    The laptop can still be turned on without the battery plugged in but the charger. I would take it to another shop to let them diagnose the issue only.
