Hi,

This is pretty much a last ditch attempt to try and salvage my Nitro 5.

After encountering some terrible performance issues out of nowhere, CPU running at 100%, whilst just on a single browser I shutdown my laptop to try and restart. Ever since it will continually fail on Critical Process Died followed by a Preparing Automatic Repair loop.

I have attempted exhausted all advanced options.

  1. Reset PC - There was a problem resetting your PC
  2. Start Up Repair couldn't repair your PC
  3. Start Up Settings - cannot enable safe mode
  4. Uninstall updates - Sorry ran into problem
  5. UEFI Firmware Settings - Restored to default without any success
  6. System Restore - Blocked due to you must enable system protection

I can launch CMD prompt and have performed the following:

  1. sfc /scannow - During verification it always advises that Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. Restart however doesn't fix and you can just repeat this process again and again. It is access denied to attempt to view the logs.
  2. mdsched - Memory test does not highlight any issues
  3.  chkdsk c: /x /r - Windows has made corrections to the file system
  4. bcdedit /set recoveryenabled no - This reports has been successful but checking it remains as yes

My laptop has two 1TB SSD (one as the OS and the other is storage) and two 8GB of RAM. I tried swapping out the RAM and removing the storage SSD, reset the CMOS battery but none of this has worked either.

Anyone have any other ideas or encountered this issue and found a solution?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

"System Restore - Blocked due to you must enable system protection" Two things you must do first when starting a new laptop/PC is
    1. make a USB Windows recovery drive (also after each major Windows upgrade/Clean install)
    2. Check that System Protection is turned on so restore points are created after updates or driver/apps uninstalling.

Running just SFC /scannow is useless if Windows system image is corrupted/damaged as SFC uses that system image as reference. you must first refresh the system image with DISM online and then run SFC. Make sure internet is working and open the Command prompt as administrator, then paste this in the Command window: Dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth and Enter. That should complete successfully, if that hangs repeatedly even after you press Esc the only option left is: Clean install Windows.

After DISM completed successfully (should not take more than a few minutes) you run the SFC /scannow command till you see "….did not find any integrity violations" The SFC log is stored in "C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log" the file adds all your DISM and SFC results so it is a good idea to delete CBS.log sometimes. Scroll to the bottom and you will find what flies were corrupted and were repaired. This will give you an idea how bad the damage was (or still is). Finally try to "Reset This PC" with losing your data option.

The fact you cannot "Reset this PC" indicates the Windows recovery volume on your boot drive is gone or corrupted.

Clean install Windows is the only option or bringing it to Acer Services in your country to reset the system to factory defaults.
