Hi all,

I come to you all broken, on my knees and need support.

Short story - I need assistance recovering the HD from my busted Swift laptop, series SF314-42. Outside of tools to remove the parts, what hardware/software may be needed to recover any files from the removed HD?

LONG STORY

In late June our garage and SUV were destroyed by falling trees during a quick storm and we have been fighting both home and auto insurances since to try and recover total loss items (SUV, building, roof, landscape, personal property, etc.). If any of you have NOT had to work through this procedure, it includes a TON of documentation, pictures, receipts, links to each item, and so on. For every item that was in the garage at the time of the damage, we have to account for it. EACH ITEM.. We had bikes, toys, car parts, wood working and welding tools, car cleaning supplies, all yard tools, a small remote work space for me…. A TON OF STUFF!

Current condition with pictures, when it was bought, where, receipt, link to description, etc. As you can maybe tell with this email, I'm a little OCD about things and worked to put every item in an order that would be easier for the insurance adjuster to review, to hopefully expedite resolution. Mix in other life events, work, kids, home, MAJOR bouts with depression, and a lack of any real care from either insurance company to work out a fair outcome and all of a sudden it's November, with work still to be done.

The last couple weeks have actually been a little clearer for me and I spent about twelve hours just in the last two days working on the personal property (insurance calls them PPIF forms) documents, with about 90% completion at around 4PM yesterday (I literally did not step away from the computer for a solid 6-7 hours).

I jump up to get some water and a biobreak only to return to a non-responding laptop. The backlights to the keys are responding but hitting any key, the finger scanner, a quick press of the power button - nothing gets it going. I walk away for a quick sec to grab the mail, still nothing…

Then, I press and hold the power button which does result in the "Acer" screen with the normal boot sequence as expected after a reboot. A little out of the norm for the laptop to reboot on the fly like that, but still not much out of the norm at this point. I've had this happen to me in the past like the laptop has gone into sleep mode or the like, and all apps, files, browsers are still open. NOT THIS TIME.

Nothing is open when boot-up is complete to the desktop. I then also realized that "Autosave" was not enabled b/c of the MS 365 account we're using is tied to my wife's work account, which does not allow local autosave. I worked ALL DAY only to find that NONE of the updates I did since, 11/14 at around noon EST were available. ALLLLL GOONNNEEEE.

Yes, I even checked the "Restore lost files" options in MS to see if the doc's or xls's were saved as a new version - nothing. I LOST IT!!!! X-rays on my hand were negative, but the laptop is in the shape of a taco after your first bite and the shell breaks apart…

This morning I did try to power it up (silly, but first true step in troubleshooting) but of course, it does not respond. I do plan to take it apart in hopes that the HD isn't toooo damaged and can be connected somehow for file recovery. Most newer photos are backed up but I moved all older photos to this HD in hopes of spending a couple of days sorting and going through old phone backups and such. ALL GONE. All of the recent legal files and work completed were stored, ALL GONE.

I get it - completely my fault and no one is being harder on me than I am at the moment. Yes, I going to therapy for that.

That's why I'm here - I need HELP. I need your help! Acer help! Please, something… I feel horrible enough that I destroyed our only means of computing for the household (this old surfacePro isn't great) but also knowing that I may have destroyed YEARS of family data may be too much to handle.

Thanks for reading! It means more than you may know.

Probably has an m.2 SSD card for storage, not a 2.5" HDD. All you need is an inexpensive m.2 card-to-USB adapter (like shown below from Amazon) to connect the SSD card to another computer's USB port. If the card is still mostly good, you can open it as a D or E drive on the other computer and copy the files you want.

All you need is another Windows PC and an external USB 2.0 or 3.0 HDD case, depending what type USB port you are going to use. These cases are cheap ($10) and are readily available in any DIY PC Brick and Mortar shop or online. If the drive is not detected in File Explorer on the other PC you may have to give it another drive letter (E: instead of C:) in Windows Disk Management, but normally this should not be needed. Copy your personal files but not the Windows system files to the other computer.

Yes, the SF314-42 models do not have a place for the old style 2.5" drives, just the M.2 slot for an SSD. So, as Jack suggests, you only need an external M.2 case that gives you a USB connection to a different computer. All your files should be available unless that was physical damage to the drive. The one caveat you might run into is that M.2 slot supports both SATA and NVMe drives, and the external cases usually support one or the other. Your drive is likely NVMe, but you should look up the model number to verify before ordering the case.
