If the hard drive is encrypted and you don't have the password there is no way to reset the system, you have to install a new boot drive.

If it is a password issue you may be able to boot with a USB recovery/installation drive but that will be difficult to find.

This is a Windows7 netbook from 2008 and may only take Windows8.1, both W7 and W8.1 OS are phased out by MS and Acer Support, I recommend not to spend any more money on this old laptop and get instead a new Windows11 system for your son.

I strongly suggest that you buy a new laptop as these old Acer One laptops are more trouble than they are worth, I speak from personal experience as I've tried to upgrade my Aspire One Happy 2 AOHAPPY2-N578Qb2b that I bought for my wife years ago, as it was the rage then, as this was such a pretty pink 10.1" laptop fashion item, but unfortunately , that is ALL THAT IT WAS 😁 as being anything of a laptop was never ever met by Acer, so be aware of all this>

Don't invest and waste your hard earned on this laptop, as its way too slow and its graphics are way too incompatible with today's graphics. My suggestion to you is to Invest in a Win-11 Acer laptop like the Acer Aspire 1 which will serve you allot better.

    - Windows 11 Home
    - Intel Celeron Processor N4500
    - 14" HD 1366 x 768 resolution
    - Intel® UHD Graphics
    - 8GB RAM & 128GB eMMC
    - 802.11a/b/g/n/ac wireless LAN + BT 5.0
    - Dual Band (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz)
    - 1.45Kg, Up to 8 hours
    - USB 3.2 & USB 2.0, HDMI
    - 1 Year Mail in Warranty
