Often you can get this information from on-line companies that sell RAM chips.  My suspcion is that you can go to 4MB of RAM but that you will find that you only have two RAM slots, each with a 1MB chip installed.  This means that you will end up recycling 2GB of RAM in order to do the upgrade.  In my experience, adding RAM does not provide nearly the performace boost that decreasing the seek time on a hard disk does.  My wife has my old Acerpower-FH desktop.  It came with a 5400 RPM drive which began to fail after about 18 months in service.  I ordered a WD 10,000 RPM drive designed for gamers which cost 2/3 of what I originally paid for the system, but it made a huge difference in performance.  I had added RAM to that system earlier and saw very little improvement, in part due to the fact that Microsoft had not really implemented good memory management above 2GB for Vista.  Upgrading to Win 7 along with the RAM upgrade might give you a little more in performance and stability, but ... IMHO it may not be worth the expense.

    This computer can use DDR2 PC2-5300, DDR2 PC2-8500, DDR2 PC2-6400 memory types.

Around 80 bucks or less will get you 2 2gig sticks. Vista will perform a lot better with 4 gig, in my experience.
Just depends on how clean your system is. If a lot of bloat is running (and/or malware), it will quickly use up any extra ram you stick in it and slow it down just the same. The faster HD suggestion above is a good one, however, just a fresh intall of the OS will seem to speed things up a lot (its just fresh and clean, no bloat). (You would be putting a fresh install on any new HD anyways)

You can squeeze quite a bit more life out of that PC, however, it is on the dated side, might be worth just saving the upgrade $$ and getting a newer one.
