A515-45-r74z Audio port in my device does not work

I just learned by buying some external speakers, that the audio port on my Acer aspire a515-45-r74z doesn't work. The laptop is just a year old bought brand new. I never used the audio jack before because I always use Bluetooth headphones but just today my external speakers came in the mail with a need to use both USB and audio port for connecting. Once connected, no sound flowing out of the external speakers. I also tried a headset that does have a regular 3.5mm cable and still nothing and these headsets work on my tablet. Is this an ongoing issue that the audio ports aren't working on the laptop

When inserting an 3.5mm phone jack in the laptop audio port you should get a message on the screen "What are you inserting" with a choice of audio devices. If you don't see that message the plug is not recognized by the laptop hardware, try different plugs is my advice.
