Helios 300 PH317 not charging, beeping if turned on while plugged in

Hi,

I have a Predator Helio 300 PH317-54, and it's not charging.

Yesterday I could get it to charge by wiggling the cable and positioning it carefully so the charge stays on; today, there has been nothing. The charge indicator light isn't coming on.

I've tried a different acer charger with it, it charged initially, but when I turn the laptop on, it stopped charging. I've also noticed it's started making a beeping noise when turned on if it's plugged in.

Before these problems started, I upgraded to a 1TB SSD and an external back-lit mechanical keyboard, as the W key is sticky when held down, creating problems for gameplay.

I've purchased a new charger, but I was wondering if it could be anything else that would cause these issues.

You may be using Universal power adapters instead of an Acer recommended OEM adapter for your model, the pin of the plug has to fit tightly in the DC barrel port of the laptop, this is the most important part, you should feel a click when the pin is fully inserted in the laptop port. the size of the pin must be 5.5mm (outside diameter of the metal barrel) x 1.7mm (inside of the pin). If you can get hold of a caliper tool (DIY hardware shop) measure the pin of your adapter plug and the inside of the port (5.5mm).

These are the Acer recommended OEM adapters for Helios 300 PH317-51

Another issue is the capacity, there are 3 different capacity adapters for your model, I recommend a 230-Watt model.

    135 Watt

    7.10 Amp

    19.0 Volt

    180 Watt

    9.23 Amp

    19.5 Volt

    230 Watt

    11.8 Amp

    19.5 Volt

All these adapters are for sale on the internet, just Google for the right model:

Did you buy it from an Acer approved retailer? You wrote you bought a new adapter, where did you buy it and is it on the OEM list I posted?

Check the pin of the adapter plug and how tight it fits in the DC port, do you feel a click when the plug is fully inserted. If the plug is kind of loose when inserted, it will make a poor contact.

I bought the new one from Amazon; it's not arriving until Wednesday.

  • Does the new charger have the same power, current and voltage as the original charger? Do you have a multimeter to test the charger output?

Yes, it matches the info given on the back of the original charger. I don't have a multimeter, though.
