What formfactor is the SSD inside an Aspire 3 A315-23-R4L4 laptop?

Hello community!

I'm asking because I'm a bit afraid of needlessly opening the laptop up and risking to break another screw socket (I already did so in the past…), before having bought the necessary upgrades.

My model seems to be very obscure and only sold within my country, which makes information hard to find. What formfactor is the SSD inside? The standards are a bit confusing, regarding the different Nvme physical sizes (M.2 2242, 2280, 2230). Windows reports the drive as being a nvme wdc pc sn530 sda

Also, is it possible to upgrade the on-board SSD, as well as add in a second one for more storage?

Many thanks!

Get a special laptop screwdriver set available in any PC shop, to fix a stripped or broken screw socket Google for help.

your laptop has one M.2 PCIe x4 slot, limited to SSD Gen 3, so if you install a Gen4 SSD it will run at lower Gen3 speed.

You can upgrade the original 256GB M.2 NVMe SSD to a 512GB or 1TB M.2 NVMe SSD, a M.2, 2280 SSD like Samsung EVO 970 would work OK. If you also want to install a 2.5" HDD/SSD, you need to buy the cable, HDD bracket, and the screws.

Acer quotes M.2 2280 type drives for your laptop, it has provisions for the M.2-2230 type drive also. The Aspire A315-23 laptop is specified in its SG as being able to operate with M.2 2280 PCIe 3 x2 and PCIe Gen 3 x4 type drives, as an example the PCIe 3x4 type drive is the - 512GB - HYNIX HFM512GDJTN I-82A0A5 M.2 drive with read/write speeds of 2300 MB/s shown below.

These are the A315-23 M.2 SSD drives fitted by Acer to this laptop, with the max speed is the PCIe 3 x4 that is highlighted below as some of these drives are also M.2 2280 SSD PCIe 3x2 type drives, good luck and hope this helps you out some more.
