Aspire3 A315-51-3177 goes to sleep but won't wake up

It is fine when I close the lid and then open the lid later (it powers back up) but if I leave the lid open (easy to forget), after a while (I have set it to 2 hours now!) it goes to sleep, and when I come back, nothing will tempt it to power up again. I have tried every key combination. The only thing that works is holding the power button down for about 7 seconds to force-turn it off, then press the power button again to turn it on again. But then I lose everything that was open. Is there a secret button I should be pressing to wake it up?

No, the issue is with BIOS settings and Windows Power Plan and if you are using Acer custom power setting and ACC options as well. Conflicting settings will cause what you describe. Reset BIOS by booting to Bios with F2 and press F9 (reset), save on Exit Bios and reboot. The Power plan has an option to reset and use Balanced Power Plan rather than the Acer custom Power Plan, Don't use any options in Acer Care Center. If you still have issues reset CMOS and BIOS by disconnecting the battery cable (you need to open the laptop) take out and put back the CMOS coin battery in the CMOS capsule and press the Power Button for 1 minute (continuously), reconnect the battery. Run the Power Troubleshooter in Windows and set the action for Lid Open/Closed to do nothing. Disable Fast Startup and hibernate but leave Sleep enabled. You have a Sleep key Zzzz next to the Escape key and for Wake any key will work unless you have Wake disabled in BIOS (check that). to resume from Hibernate (not recommended) use the Power Button. You can program the power button to do nothing, Sleep or Shut Down but since you have the Sleep key I would not change that.

There are many useful links on the internet about Power Plan settings in Windows check that too.

Thank you for that comprehensive answer. I'll give those things a try.
