Hi, I have this issue that the UEFI seems to reset my secure boot setting back to enabled and change my touchpad back to basic, and this happens around every few days.

I was told it's very likely a UEFI firmware issue (being outdated) and not a CMOS battery issue (given how the laptop is 5-6 years old),

I was going to upgrade the UEFI but I'm worried about the potential corruption chance of the operation that will render the laptop unusable.

Does it have a firmware backup mode? If not, how can I manually back it up so that in the event it goes wrong, I can revive the old UEFI?

And in general, do I perform the upgrade myself or just give it to a repairs center?

Secure Boot must always remain enabled in BIOS otherwise Windows won't run, maybe your touchpad does not support Windows10 Precision multi-gestures and Windows turns the advanced Touchpad mode in BIOS off? I would not update BIOS because of this but first inquire on Elan/Synaptics forum what Windows10 driver for your Touchpad model is supporting the Windows10 Precision feature. Are multi-gestures working with your Touchpad? Have you uninstalled the 3 touchpad drivers (red circles) and let Windows reinstall them, before you uninstall touchpad make sure you got a working USB mouse working as you will lose total control once the touchpad drivers are gone.

I'm unable to keep Secure Boot on because of the Linux distro I dual-booted with my Windows OS.

Also, the touchpad's advanced settings were working fine all this time, so not it is not an OS problem.

Also I'm on Windows 11 and have never faced this issue until around 2 weeks ago

  • I think the ideal would be to test the rtc battery with a multimeter. It should be around 3.3v. Disconnect the RTC battery and set the multimeter to the continuous voltage scale at 20v. Then place the black multimeter lead on the negative terminal of the RTC battery and the red multimeter lead on the positive battery terminal. Check the incoming voltage.

If the voltage is too low, change the rtc battery. It only costs a few cents on the dollar.
