Hi there,

I'm new here with my first predator helios and I was wondering how compatible the laptop is with linux since I'm thinking on buying a new SSD for dual boot to use Pop_OS! but I'm also afraid of PredatorSense not working since that program controls the fans.

So any input about this is appreciated, thx.

Predator Sense will not work under Pop_OS and Secure boot must be disabled before installing Pop!_OS. Secure boot can be disabled in the BIOS of your laptop, see this Acer guide "Enable or Disable Secure Boot on an Acer notebook" and make sure that the bios is updated to the last Version: 1.08 of your laptop. Be aware that you are asking for troubles with installing Pop_OS on this laptop in dual boot.

I thought it was only trouble if they were on the same drive.

I dont think you will need to disable secure boot as pop will be signed by the ubuntu sub key i think

predator sense wont work but the fans will still have whatever their last fan curve was set to (i think its the last one anyway), and you may need to re install windows though as you will have RST enabled on the device

I have tried both Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and Ubuntu 24.04 LTS on a dual boot setup alongside with windows.

The only thing that is unsupported is the keyboard backlight. This specific model has the annoying random blue lighting profile which is the default lighting profile set in the BIOS level. Whenever you boot into linux, because you dont have the predator sense app on linux, you have no option to ever change this lighting profile to as simple as full static color. There's open source scripts available on GitHub to change the lighting effects on some predator model, but this model is not supported as of this date due to its per-key RGB making communication with the driver API from kernel alot harder than other models. In short, if you are using linux out of the box, you will have to accept the keyboard lighting effects being unable to change.

For Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, you might need to tinker a little bit with NVIDIA driver if you want NVIDIA gpu support. Out of the box, it uses the Xorg open source driver. You can change to NVIDIA proprietry driver for better NVIDIA GPU support but that requires some little bit of tinkering and might black your screen and you cant recover if you are not familiar with Linux.

For Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, out of the box, NVIDIA driver works prefectly without any tinkering but the stability of it in other aspects is a little bit more unstable compared to 22.04.

Note that on linux, as far as I know after some research, NVIDIA's dynamic boost is not available. Example for this model on Windows with dynamic boost the power limit for the GPU can go up to 175W, but on linux the power limit of GPU is locked at 115W which is the default maximum available by this GPU without any dynamic boost black magic on Windows. But on normal gaming experience, games running on Linux with or without Proton, most of the time it can run as close as possible to running on windows without performance/turbo mode. So if you are a normal gamer who seldom turns on performance/turbo mode on windows, you would notice no much difference when running the same game on linux (provided the game is compatible with proton).
