Why does my Acer say "Chrome OS is missing or damaged?" Then they want to charge you almost $100

Message says Chrome OS is missing or damaged. Please insert a recovery USB stick or SD card. Trying to do this is a lesson in futility. Call customer support and they will do it from their end. It will cost near $100. Anyone know of any other option to install this software. Will a technition be able to do this at a computer fix it store? Absurd.

The $100 is likely going to involve a motherboard replacement. That error shows up most commonly (at least in a way that isn't recoverable by simply following the directions) caused by a failed drive, and on a lot of the Chromebooks the drives are soldered to the MB. Hence a costly fix…

Unless you tell us more than “Laptop not working. Tech support says I need to download new software” and what is exactly WRONG with your laptop and what is the model number of your laptop? We can't help you out with appropriate details.

    Hi @kittbrooks

I am very sorry to hear this, unfortunately, the Acer Community is not a direct portal to Customer service, the Acer Forum Discussions were designed as a peer to peer support community where Acer users help other Acer users. Many Acer employees (Moderators), read the various topics posted here and you will notice that some Acer employees interact with members when appropriate, primarily we want the community to be a place where members can exchange their own advice and ideas.

Only your local support services can help you with this, the community is not an escalation channel, unfortunately.

Sorry for any inconveniences this has caused you,

    Regards,

    Acer-Samuel
