Nitro 5 AN515-57 Parasitic Battery Drain

I bought my Nitro 5 about four months ago, but haven't got round to using it much. I have Windows 11 installed, all latest updates, drivers and BIOS. I have Fast Resume turned OFF, When I shut down my system and don't use it, it is draining the battery. I turned it on today after last charging and using it about two weeks ago, the battery is down to 62%.

I've installed a second NVMe SSD for game storage and a 1TB HDD for regular files, but these aren't the issue. It's like there is a parasitic drain when the system is supposed to be fully OFF. A bit like when a car's systems don't go to sleep and flatten the battery.

Is this a BIOS issue, or a hardware flaw? I have a JVC 4K camcorder with built in battery that does the same thing. I have to constantly charge it to avoid full discharge and battery damage. I HATE built in batteries, they should come with a master switch to disconnect them easily electrically, like a bus or truck does :)

    Hi,

Open Acer Quick Access App and check whether the "Power-off USB charging" is turned on, if it is, turn it off and see whether it helps.

Hi @SuperGeekJay when you talk about Fast Resume do you mean Fast Startup Mode?

Also make sure that the computer shutdown is set to off and not to suspend.

It may also happen that the equipment does not incorporate a cmos stack, in which case the integrated battery is in charge of maintaining the date and time values as well as the rest of the BIOS settings.

Although your model does include an RTC battery for date and time, I'm not sure it also keeps the rest of the BIOS options:

Hi @Alejandro, thanks for your response. Yes, I meant Fast Startup. I always turn it off in Win 10/11 to stop excessive SSD writes. I always make sure the computer is off and not in sleep.

I can understand the main battery holding CMOS/UEFI settings as well as the RTC battery, but surely it shouldn't discharge this quick as the RTC/CMOS only uses a few milliamps, hence why RTC batteries last 3 to 5, even more, years.

Hi @brummyfan2 I checked this and it was on. Although no USB devices are connected when the laptop is off (I run it with a cooling pad and always unplug it when finished using it), so an open circuit should not use any power. I turned the setting off, and will see if there's any improvement.

Thanks for the suggestion though, hopefully this may do something :)

  • However, the usb port is still enabled. That's why there is battery drain. It is interesting to disable that feature in quick access.

It`s easy to check by pluggin a smartphone while laptop is OFF. Even with USB power is OFF, there is extreme self-dicharge of battery.

  • What is the bios version?

The BIOS is the latest version. Disabling the USB charge option made a slight difference but it still discharging slowly over a few months, I left it off the last few months as a test. I guess I'll just have to live with it :(

  • Disable fast startup from power options as well.?
