SSD And HDD Capcity Limits Acer Aspire A514-55

I want to install a larger capcity SSD drive, my question is, what is the capcity limit on a SSD drive? I've heard there is none, but I want to be sure before I purchase one. Can I install a HDD along side the SSD drive? I know there a 2 TB limit on that - but do correct me if I'm mistaken about that. Is the HDD kit included, or do I have to buy one? I know there wasn't a kit in the box when I bought it here at a Acer store in Manila (Philippines) where I live…

The 256 GB SSD drive that's in it is puny, and I want more drive space, and a combination SSD and HDD drive set up would be ideal…

Not being a fan of Windows 11, I'm going to go wth Windows 10 Professional…

Lastly, is the install of both drives something I can do myself with the right tools - which I have. I've seen a couple of videos on You Tube tat make it seem simple, but I thought I'd better ask here before I try something I've never done before…

I strongly recommend you don't downgrade to W10 as you may get driver issues after the downgrade, also you need to upgrade again to W11 in Q4 2015 as W10 will be no longer supported by MS. Windows 11 (whatever the version) 22H2 is a far superior platform, more stable/robust (no more Event errors), far better security (no more 3rd party AV required), faster and W11 maintains all your drivers including the firmware. The browser Edge is better and the monthly updates are fast and flawless. It will take a while to get used to W11 looks, most of the W11 gadgets and screens can be tweaked to look like W10 or can be disabled.

I too live in the Philippines and Acer's services are excellent in Manila, send them an e-mail: aphi.service@acer.com visit their store or call them if you need help on your upgrades, they will be happy to do this for you like providing the 2.5" SATA HDD bracket and cable. I can recommend the new Samsung 2.5" EVO 870 V-NAND SSD up to 4 TB capacity that should be plenty for any data storage. the 250GB SSD that you have now is more than enough for the Windows11 system I would not bother upgraded your PCIe SSD.

The Aspire A514-55s laptop that you have has provisions for an M.2 SSD and a 2.5” SATA-3 type drive for either a mechanical drive or an SSD drive. The M.2 or the 2.5” drives if formatted in GUID (GPT) format that Win-10 and 11 bios run on the best and most efficiently (Win-11 is what you should run the A514-56 on and NOT Win-10) as this format has virtually limitless capacity and is quoted at 8 petabytes max theoretically, which is way beyond what you will ever be able to buy in HDDs or install into this laptop in HDDs.

The MBR/Legacy format in Windows OS has a max theoretical capacity of 2.2TB limit and that is the only limit that your laptop has if you format the 2.5” SATA-3 mechanical drive with the MBR/Legacy format but, if you format this 2.5” SATA-3 mechanical or SSD drive in GUID (GPT) as your slave drive, it will be like the M.2 drive and virtually you can put whatever size capacity HDD you can buy.

Mechanical SATA-3 drives in affordable max capacities come in 5TB 2.5” drive limits from Seagate, WD or Toshiba or other manufacturers but and if you want the highest capacity 2.5" SSD drive on today’s market like the 31TB Samsung PM1643a model it will cost you big bucks like USD $8500 which is way way too expensive for most users. Those are your options but you need to get a HDD caddy and two different types of screws 4x to fit the HDD to the caddy and 4x screws to fit the HDD caddy to the laptop base, all this can be easily done by a user like you.

This is the 2.5"HDD kit components that you will need to buy:

4x screws to secure HDD bracket to laptop base / Acer PN: HQ221-1036-4000

4x screws to secure HDD to bracket / Acer PN: HQ22-11031-1000
