ACER Swift sf315-52 Issues powering up computer - blue and orange LED on

Hi!

I have an ACER Swift sf315-52. It's had its problems for quite some time (related to starting up) but now it is definitely having a big issue. I read quite a lot of pages of this forum about the blue and orange LED indicators but could not find an answer to my issue, so I'm starting my own thread. If answered before please let me know!

So this morning the computer's been turned on but left at the side for a minute and it fell asleep. Trying to get it back alive failed; we noticed that both the blue lights and orange lights were on even when unplugging the charger. Pressing the power button for 20+ seconds didn't give any results too. So I started digging into the open threads on this forum and learned about the reset hole & paperclip. So we tried that and it successfully did turn off both LEDs.

Now putting the power supply back in the computer gives the orange LED, and putting it out extinguishes it, which is good. But we tried (after waiting +-15 minutes with charger in) putting the laptop on, and both LEDs turned on (which is normal from my understanding) but nothing appeared on the screen. And again, unplugging the charger doesn't affect the orange LED (which should go out). It is not screen related as far as I understand, as the keyboard backlights would go on. Also the fact both LEDs stay on lets me think the computer is kind of stuck in a loop.

We now just did another paperclip reset, and are charging the computer. In a few minutes, we will be trying to put the computer on without the charger plugged in. I will post an update, but I'm fairly confident it will not work unfortunately. Also, I'd like to know how this happened in order to avoid it happens again. Could someone please help me out?

Thanks a lot!!

    Hi,

Did you leave the laptop to rest for 15Minutes after the battery reset with the paper clip? If you have, disconnect from Mains, disconnect the battery, remove CMOS battery, leave the laptop to rest for 30 minutes, reconnect everything, fully charge the battery and see whether it helps.

Update: tried following after it charged for some time (~1h)

    • powering it on without the charger plugged in. As expected the blue LED turned on, but no other result. We tried plugging the power in and out but it had no influence on the orange charge-LED, confirming my doubts about the computer being in a kind of loop from the moment it's turned on.
    • (after another press with a paperclip): trying to hold the power button down before the computer even was powered on. This gave no result, immidiately a blue LED.

I really have no clues left… please help!

I hadn't seen your answer because I didn't refresh this page. I indeed had left the laptop rest 15 minutes after the paper clip, then plugged it in and waited for another half hour approximately.

The second half of your explanation is about opening the back of the laptop, right? If so, I might try but have nearly no knowledge about it…

    Hi,

You can access CMOS battery near the shield next to fan, if you are not familiar with disassembly, get it fixed by a technician at any laptop repair shop.

Yes, you really want to do the full process when trying to reset the battery, or else you will just force a power cycle, which you have done. Shut the laptop off and disconnect everything, including the charger. Use a SIM tool or a bent paperclip to press and hold the reset for 15 seconds. Release the reset and wait for 15 minutes or so, then plug only the power back in. Wait for the battery indication to show blue, then turn it on and see if the issue is fixed.

    Hi Billsey!

Done all this till "wait for the battery indication to show blue". Now, do we power on the computer while plugged in/out, or doesn't it matter?

    Thanks for the help!

Once the battery indicator is showing the blue for a full battery, you can power it on with the charger still connected or disconnect the charger and power it on. That shouldn't make a difference, since the battery has been reset at that point.

I assume that your laptop is 4+ years old and also your 65 watt power adapter and battery. The blue LED light starting with the adapter should be orange LED till the battery is full then the LED turns blue, blue LED only would mean it is running/starting on battery without adapter. Buy another power adapter ($25) exactly the same type that came with your laptop, online shops always list compatible laptops for the advertised replacement battery, tip (color code, ID and OD of the pin) of the plug is equally important. Disconnect the battery, plug in the new power adapter and try to start. If still nothing send your laptop to Acer Services for checking, having 2 adapters is recommended for backup anyway.
