Why did you have to take the MB out? Didn't want to get the screws needed to use the old mounts?

I had to take it out to get to the backplate on the cpu as there is no way to take of the side panel on my case, I wanted to use the backplate that comes with the Noctua cooler

No need to remove the motherboard. Just use the slightly different length screws (10 or 12mm long IIRC) instead of the ones shipped with the Noctua.
