Hi, My AN515-42 series laptop has been making this noise for almost a year now. (Warranty expired!)

I don't know if it is coming from the FAN or HDD. I thought it is maybe HDD but It would have been already failed if it was the HDD, we talking about a year and I don't feel any performance difference on HDD. I run tests on HDD programs (Acer Care Center, Hard Disk Sentinel etc) but the hard disk seems healthy.

What are your thoughts?

The Nitro AN515-42 has a M.2 SATA-3 6.0Gbits/s SSD boot drive which there is no way you will get any noises from an SSD, if you have a 2.5"slave mechanical drive also then it could be from that drive, as mechanical drives have a rotating platter that could be make a noise which and if its been happening for 1 year then its not that, the main culprit are your CPU/GPU fans that their bearings are faulty and the fans are not spinning 100% and are hitting their side casing causing this noise. Open you laptops back case up and boot the laptop and inspect the CPU/GPU fans.

Below is the Thermal Module and its fans for the AN515-42 but there is no part numbers for the fans as Acer only lists a replacement for the whole Thermal Module and not its fans, so look for the fans on the web as they are available if the fans are the problem of the noise coming from your laptop.

I took it a part. It sounded like the noise coming from the HDD, so I ordered a SSD. Now, I am going to replace the hdd with SSD. My laptop came with preinstalled WIN10, how can I get my windows activation code before I install the windows to SSD?

Your AN515-42 laptop Win-10 has a Digital Key that is inside the bios which is allocated to your laptop and its always registered with Microsoft and to your account. Download Win-10 installation files to an 8GB USB also make the USB bootable with Rufus as this software can also download the windows installation files and create a boot drive togther onto that 8GB USB, after that finishes, then do a clean install of Win-10 and you are on your way to using your laptop with a speedier HDD than those old mechanical old and lazy drives😁
